It's officially World Coconut Day 🥥😅

I know it might seem a little bit of a silly day, but sometimes you need silly and I'm a bit of a fan of the coconut!
The coconut has many uses and benefits! You can eat it and drink it, but it also makes a beautiful fragrance as either a spray or candle, and a great ingredient in oils and moisturisers. For instance, I sometimes use special coconut oil it in my hair when it needs a good nourish and it really works miracles!!!
But there are some other interesting and very practical uses for coconuts that we wouldn’t necessarily think of…
- The leaves are used to make baskets, brooms, mats, and many more practical items.
- And the coconut coir is a natural elastic fiber used to make ropes, strings, stuffing for mattress, and many more interesting items.
- But we can’t forget the famous shell and husk which can be used as fuel! Both are sources of charcoal.
In typical fashion, I'm going to give you a bit of history about today (because I can't help myself, I get so intrigued when researching).
World Coconut Day exists to commemorate the formation of the Asian Pacific Coconut Community (or APCC). Coconuts are produced in over 80 countries, with all major contributors forming part of this group. The largest producer is Indonesia, so it comes as no surprise that the APCC’s headquarters is located there, in a city called Jakarta.
And here a couple of my favourite coconut facts 😁 (there are more!)
- Coconuts were used as a weapon in World War 2 by the Japanese who used to fill them (typically with Grenades) and throw them at their enemies.
- In London, April 2007 the biggest ever coconut ensemble happened which a whopping 5,877 people where they played it to the Monty Python hit “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life“.
- The bounty (often seen as unpopular here in the UK) was actually voted one of the top 3 chocolate bars at some point!

😅 Especially with grenades hidden in them!
Me too! Bodyshop do gorgeous coconut moisturisers and shower gels but they're not cheap so it's a rare treat for me. 😊

I use coconut coir in a lot of things, from gardening, to reptile keeping. It's very versatile stuff!
Then of course there's this great track…
