Mental health and wellbeing

I just used the NHS 111 online service because I am not sleeping. I am awaiting a call from their GP service although I do not know what good they can do. I have been having problems with sleeping for months and it is drastically impacting my mental health. I experience severe depression and suicide ideation. Lack of sleep is making both much worse.

Hi Jampa and welcome to Scope.

Scope has just lost a Team member, Albus, otherwise another moderator would normally have sent you a reply and an email. I notice he chatted with you on another thread.

Members also support one another and there are several who suffer with sleeping problems and may be able to offer advice. Your GP is there to help, too - if not in person then by telephone or email. It will take time.

We say a problem shared is a problem halved so keep posting.

Sleeping is what worries me the most in life. I've been having problems with sleeping for the past 30 years or so. I took sleeping tablets religiously every single night for 10 and a half years. I quit them beginning 2016, as they were harming me more than they were helping me. They even caused tinnitus, which is a debilitating lifelong condition. I've since been taking herbal stuff and all sort of other things, which I honestly can't claim that I'm quite happy with. Sometimes I sleep once every two nights.

As suggested above, speaking to your GP is worth it.

It's true, not sleeping or having enough sleep can seriously impact one's both physical and mental health.

Hi @Jampa, I'm so sorry I'm only just replying. Did the call help in any way?

Not really. My GP refered me to my local community mental health team. But they could do nothing until my case file was transferred from where I used to live. That has only just been done now even though I moved in May 2025.

Hi @Jampa. I'm so glad you reached out to them. I'm sorry it's taken so long to move forward. I'm going to pop you an email with some other support options that might be able to help if you need it at any time in the meantime. Please keep an eye out for it.
