There is no record of that 13 yo being flogged, that's the thing. The last recorded flogging was 1980, this was 1983. Just him alone with a middle aged man.

The lad was traumatised by his experience, and i find it very creepy that this lower house master was carrying out these punishments, but it isn't recorded.
He feels like he might have been singled out, as nobody else was flogged by then really, and everyone was drinking at Eton. David Cameron was caught with pot at that time, but no flogging.

Hey Soapy, did you manage to get your shell likes cleaned out yet? Blocked ears are a pain aren't they? I find a small Otex bulb works wonders for flushing mine out.

There was the tawse at school here, a leather strap, but this lad is talking about a 4 foot long cane, administered to the backside. Nowadays that would be a serious assault.
Anyway, i'm glad such practices have been banned now, as some teachers took out their own frustrations on only slightly naughty children.

A fifty something film maker went back to try and discover the truth. The incident must surely be troubling to him, even after 40 years.
I encourage you to read the article, as there is a sinister theme running through this incident. Why this boy, why no record of it? We are talking a 4 foot cane here, a powerful weapon in the wrong hands.

And a 4 foot cane is no ruler. When i was at primary school, the tawse or strap had been mostly phased out, being the preserve of the head master, a fierce Gael who struck terror into our hearts. I learned in later life what a kind man he really was.
Did you read the bit about him bending over, holding the stool, an extra blow added for 'coming up'? Pretty savage, and too much power held by an angry man in a secluded tower.
