Family Fund has just released a new report called Locked out of Childcareand it sheds light on how finding suitable and affordable childcare for disabled children is a big issue.

Based on a poll of 1,000 parent carers, the findings show just how wide the gap is..

  • 21% of parent carers want more childcare than they are currently able to access.
  • 38% of families who want more childcare simply can't afford it.
  • 29% say the childcare available is unsuitable because it doesn't meet their child’s needs.
  • 51% of full time parent carers say they would work more if suitable childcare hours were available.
  • 55% report that a lack of appropriate childcare negatively impacts their overall wellbeing.

With the extra costs of disability already averaging over £1,000 a month, families are being hit from all angles.

Have you faced similar barriers with childcare provisions not meeting your child’s needs?

If you could change one thing about how childcare works for disabled children and families, what would it be?
