adult skills fund, welding course, UC and fit notes

Hello,

There is something the job centre offer called adult skills fund and they have a level 2 welding course that I could go on, next one starts 2nd November. I have a current fit note until the 31st of this month. I am not feeling great about doing a course or going to work at the moment. The course would be great for me to get a step closer to working as a welder. I am not sure what to do about this. I understand that a fit note would suggest I am unable to do a course as well. I am in a muddle here and not sure how to think it through. I do not like the woman I see at the job centre either but she has not been that bad. I am waiting for help about my back as well.

the course is 10 days for each part, two parts with a week between them. so mon-fri for two weeks, a week off, then another two weeks of mon-fri. i am assuming the start times. the work coach told me that the course can only be attending if i have a work placement? i know that PETA is for apprentices but the lady i spoke to there told me its a different set up. something called SWAP, which the work coach knows about. i am concerned about this. travel to the place would require a train and push bike. my back is sketchy at the moment and i am waiting for msk appointments (physio). i am concerned about the social interactions as well, right now i am struggling to talk to anyone. has anyone had or completed anything through the job centre like this SWAP?

Hi @simon1138, that sounds like a really positive step. Would there be another course later on if you weren't able to attend this one? That might be an option to chat to your coach about if you're not quite feeling up to it this time around. Especially as it sounds like there's still quite a lot going on for you and it might be difficult to keep up with the travel.

I hope our members might be able to help with their experiences of SWAP courses soon. It's not something I've got personal experience of myself, but it sounds like a good way to do things if you're able to!
