I had a message in my journal yesterday and I am more confused and annoyed than I was before the message, so I had got carers allowance from June and went I got paid my first payment I thought I would get paid from June, has I had already confirmed to the case manager that I had set up a payment plan and he confirmed that was good and that he would tell carers allowance to pay me from June but they did not and they took the overlap payments off so was annoyed about been given the wrong information but yesterday I got this message

It said "I was not aware that Carers Allowance Unit had offset your back payment due to a form sent by Universal Credit. I wanted to inform you that we want to adjust your Universal Credit claim from 22 June 2026 to cancel the offset". So I replied that I not sure what that means. This was about 3.30 yesterday, so confused does anyone no what this means, and still got no answer as of yet. Any theories or help would be welcome.

I think by "cancel the offset" they mean UC are no longer requesting your CA backpay goes to them (UC).

You have my sympathy I'm currently grappling with UC over an issue entirely of their own making and absolutely no fault of mine!

Yes it so confusing, it sounds like they have cancelled the payment and I will get it but it probably means that they have cancelled the payment plan but it so confusing because why say they are cancelling from June, the payment plan does not start until November.

They are so annoying they say one thing and than do something totally different and get people in debt, stress out and confused and they fact that they are not answering is so annoying.

No wonder people get they hair off with them.

I have made a complaint last week because of this matter.

You are absolutely right to make a complaint, I'll be doing the same even though my issue has now been resolved - like yours it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Yep I know, I was expecting a good lump sum and than have it took away was so annoying.

I think they most annoying them not answering, so I are left in limbo.

Just had update and I getting the back payment but it now going to over pay on carers allowance. So happy getting the back payment but annoyed that makes me overpaid on carers allowance so will wait for them to get in touch and so out when they get in touch. Jo

They never make these things easy do they @jo1984? I had so many different letters about an underpayment and then an overpayment and then another underpayment, all about the same time period when I was off work. I'm grateful for the help but sometimes it can be really stressful

@Anhedonia2 yes definitely stressful, just not sure now what to do about the overpayment on carers allowance. I got a payment plan already so not sure if they just add it to that or I have to set up another one. It is a bloody mess.

Hello @jo1984. The overpayment should be sent to debt management where it is usually added to your total. They sometimes will contact you to adjust your payment plan but in most cases, UC will already be deducting the maximum percentage legally allowed. If that is the case for you then nothing will change right now, it will simply take you a little longer to pay them back.

Did it give any information in your overpayment letter? If you'd rather know for definite you can call DWP debt management directly but it often takes a number of weeks to even appear on their system.

Hi @Emilee, I have advanced payment that I paying, this was something I had when I first signed on last year but it ends in July and I agree with debt management to pay £20 off the overpayment for UC and when the advanced payment ends in July it can go up to £40ish with a review in 12mths. So I am guessing that just added it on to that overpayment and I just pay the £20 than £40 and will look at it in 12mths. I guessing, information from them is never great but I just guess this is what will happen.

Yes if you have an agreement in place with them, they should honour that and continue to only take the £20 for now. If they change it when the new debt is added to the total, give them a call and they will reset the plan, they are usually very helpful.

Thanks that great helps, was a little unsure about it but it not loads more to be added so it should be ok. And yes when I rang up the person I spoke to was very nice and very helpful.
