Help with moving out

I'm a 29 years old individual, recently completed my masters and planning to move out from parents home to live a free life. I was born with Cerebral Palsy and I need help with almost everything- like cooking, cleaning and personal care. I've been trying to contact my social worker. Unfortunately they are not available. Can someone please guide me through how am I going to live on my own? Living with parents- especially parents with Asian mindset is getting more complex now. I want to move out ASAP.

Hi @m_chowdhury97, when you say your social worker isn't available, is that permanently or will you be able to talk to them again soon? It sounds like a good idea to have a chat with them at some point if you can to discuss your options.

I have contacted Adult Social Services. They told me as soon as any Social Worker become available, they will contact me. I was planning to move out since 2022, unfortunately my circumstances change when I suffered from more physical needs, resulting depending on parents who think they can control me just because I'm disabled!. I had endometriosis, I think somehow it affected my lower body and I recently had my surgery. I want to live in one bedroom flat, where 24/7 assistant is available. My parents even have my Pip in their bank account, I cannot even claim that, as they do my expenses they have the money! I'm fed up now and need urgent guidance. Especially looking for paid remote job. I have degree and been applying for jobs but didn't get any.

You can request from the DWP that your parents are removed as your appointee, to give you control of your own benefits.

If you feel that your parents are exploiting you in any way, or that you are at risk from their behaviour towards you, you can make a safeguarding report via your local authority.

That sounds like a really difficult situation with your parents @m_chowdhury97, no wonder you're fed up. I'm sorry you're having to face that. You've done the right thing by contacting Adult Social Services to see what they can do for you. Hopefully you can get somewhere sorted soon and get some independence back.

Are your parents listed as your appointees for your PIP, or was it always just set up to go to them? Do you feel you'd be able to manage your claim and expenses without them, or would you need some support from someone else?

I think that's a big step because currently I'm not getting any care support from council. My current care provider isn't suitable for me, they always have different carers everytime. All carers are non English and have communication problems, so I really struggle because despite from an Indian family. I consider myself as British because I grew up here. I really need information on Universal Credit- as I'm 29 can I claim this as a single applicant because I don't want to include my parents in this as their UC may get affected. My parents warned me, if I claim UC their UC must not affected. Right now, my father is controlling everyone's benefits. I have a 16 years brother with Downs Syndrome, despite having my physical issues sometimes I'm forced to look after my brother as well.

You can claim UC as an adult @m_chowdhury97, your parents' benefits shouldn't be affected by this as your claim would count as a separate household.

If you applied without them as your appointee, the claim would be set up into your own bank account and you would manage it yourself.

Do you know if your parents claim any carers elements or carer's allowance for caring for you?

My mum claims Carer's Allowance for my brother who is Downs. She used to claim for me but I told her to stop it and claimed for brother. Well I've tried to claim UC but the office said I can't because I live with parents- it was few years ago though.

Hello @m_chowdhury97, that is quite unusual, many people claim UC and still live at home with parents. Could it be that your parents are already claiming UC for you as your appointee?

This is something I'm not aware of. I'm 28 years old now. But when I tried to claim UC I was below 25 and I've recently completed full time masters. Please explain more about claiming UC as appointee? As per I know. Parents has two other kids- 17 and 15 years and they're in education. The youngest sibling is with Downs Syndrome. I have the telephone appointment tomorrow for UC.
