PIP GP Factual Report

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help me.

I submitted my claim for pip along with evidence in July. I had my assessment with Maximus on the 21st October, and the written report was received by the DWP on the 26th. However on the 28th, my assessment was sent back to Maximus to request a GP Factual report.

I'm just wondering if anyone might know why it has been sent back for a GP factual report and what this could mean. Also what would happen if the GP don't respond.

It can be stressful when a claim seems to take a step backwards in the process, but a request for a GP Factual Report is a normal part of the system and isn't necessarily a bad sign.

The Department for Work and Pensions or the assessment provider, Maximus, doesn't request a GP Factual Report for every claim. They only ask for one when they feel they don't have enough medical evidence to confidently make a decision. The Case Manager reading your file may have found that what was written in the assessor's report doesn't fully align with your initial questionnaire, and they need a doctor to clarify the facts. They might also need official confirmation of your diagnoses, the medications you are taking, recent test results, or referrals to specialists to support what you discussed during your assessment. If the decision maker suspects a severe condition but lacks the formal medical documentation to prove it, they will ask the GP for a factual report to ensure they are awarding the correct points. Ultimately, it means the Decision Maker wants to ensure they have all the facts before making a final decision.

GPs are asked to return these factual reports to the assessment provider within five working days of receiving them. However, surgeries are often very busy, and it is common for this to take longer. If your GP doesn't respond, Maximus will typically send a reminder to the surgery. If the GP completely ignores the request or refuses to fill it out, the DWP will eventually have to make a decision based solely on the evidence they already have, including your initial form, the medical evidence you already submitted, and the assessor's report. A lack of response from your GP won't automatically lead to a rejection, but it could mean the DWP misses out on crucial clinical backing that could help your claim.

You don't have to just wait in the dark. I highly recommended that you call your GP surgery's reception. Ask them to check their system to see if they have received the request for a PIP Factual Report from Maximus or the DWP. If they have it, politely ask if a doctor has been assigned to complete it and if they can chase it up for you. Sometimes a quick phone call from the patient is all it takes to get the GP to prioritise the paperwork and send it back to Maximus.
