I am reading a book at the moment by Steve Silberman called "Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently" which I think you would enjoy too! Although I suspect in all your research you may have already come across it. -

I do have a friend who is 69. He told me that growing up, (so, 1950s) he has a friend who had Autism. But he didn't talk.

There was a debate between doctors about whether Asperger's is or isn't an ASD because of one difference. On the National Autistic Society's website it says people with Asperger's are often above an average level of intelligence for someone their age.
