Irlen syndrome

I have condition called Irlen syndrome and I am ambassador for my condition. I like raising awareness for my condition and feel more needs to be done as in schools many children are going undiagnosed do I feel every school needs a Irlen screener, as I didn’t get diagnosed to I got to college

    a perceptual processing disorder. It is not an optical problem. It is a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information.

    caused by a defect in one of the visual pathways that carries messages from the eye to the brain. This defect causes a timing fault in processing visual information.
    Symptoms of irlen are light sensitivity, reading problems, headaches, migraines, other physical symptoms. Check out irlen.com

    Hi Hannah,, thank you for sharing and raising awareness. I read into the condition as my son (diagnosis of autism and anxiety was struggling with the light and complaining of all daylight hurting his eyes. He now wears sunglasses. There isn't an NHS test for this though is there?

    Unfortunately no test on NHS, The testing is carried out by certified Irlen Screeners or by Irlen Diagnosticians.check out Irlen.com. You find your local centre. Could I ask you where do you live.

    Hello Hannah, so good to hear that you are speaking up for Irlens Syndrome. My role is in the field of eyes and we often come across patients with such symptoms in the hospital and can see how distressing it is for them. I just wanted to add how important it is to get an eye test done as well at the Optometrists. This would rule out any problems with the eye muscles and vision, which are best treated. They may then refer you into the hospital but this depends on the Optometrists. 

    Overlays can help with the light sensitivity and movement of words but not necessarily with the muscles and vision.
