Has anyone ever dealt with the condition dyscalculia? I’d never heard of it but a private maths tutor thinks my soon may have it.

Hi there. I’m a newbie here on behalf of my son. He is 16 and just started college to study engineering. Problems we have are we always knew something was amiss in primary school education psychologist done an assessment and said he’s borderline dyslexic? I thought you were or you weren’t. Anyway fast forward to secondary school, had no help what’s so ever and was struggling. We got him a private tutor for maths who after first session asked did he have dyscalculia? Asked at school for him to be assessed but was brushed off saying it’s not actually a thing!! Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this condition?
college are great and getting him the support he needs in other areas.
Also when he has applied for jobs as soon as they see additional needs that’s the end of the application that he’s been trying to fill in.
He become such a recluse as he has suffered for many years at the hands of bullies. He also needs some friends.
Sorry for the very long post but I’m at my wits end with how he’s being treated.

I have heard of it. It is associated with spina bifida. This is a article on SpLDs like dyslexia and dyscalculia
https://www.understood.org/en/learning-thinking-differences/child-learning-disabilities/dyslexia/the-difference-between-dyslexia-and-dyscalculia and this is a free short quiz

    Hi @Sarge1969
you might like to have a look at my "Some PubMed Dyslexia Research Paper Collections" which includes a dyscalculia collection of research papers
And my be my "What is Dyslexia?" page has a description of dyslexia and some specific research paper links.
I have Auditory Processing Disorder which is the underlying cause of my dyslexia symptom., and possible dyscalculia issues, I had problems more with algebra, and  statistics

Hi @Sarge1969, I'm sorry to hear your son has been bullied so much, has the school dealt with this at all?

If you believe your son has dyscalculia then you can see a GP and ask for a referral. This will be done by completing a test that shows how your brain processes numbers. It can be associated with other disabilities like @April2018mom has said, however this is not always the case.

Please do let us know how you get on and if there is anything we can do to help. :)

We are waiting on being referred to learning support team but in the meantime his new college have been really supportive. I’ll update once I know more.
