If someone who lives alone has an empty spare bedroom and takes a refugee, would s/he lose the 25% council tax benefit and the severe disability premium?

I've just realised that I posted this in the wrong category, it should be under ESA, not DLA/PIP.

Its a good question, i read about this earlier on the payments for housing 350 a month. Then like you I thought would that impact on benefits? At a guess I would think it would effect council tax and other means tested benefits.

Until more information is posted no one can answer. However a lodger liable to pay rent would not normally affect entitlement to SDP. Although you will not be receiving rent from refugee I would expect there to be a variation/waiver or something to allow continuation of the SDP. Similarly we will  have to wait and see what the government says when detailed information becomes available.

Again I would expect there will be provision for the £350/month payment to be disregarded but we'll have to wait and see.

I forgot to say earlier that I moved your post into our ESA category @spb1612 :) Thanks for asking such a thought provoking question!

Is this not the same Tory government that was not that long ago penalising people with a so called "bedroom tax".  Now they are looking for people with extra room in their home. What a comedy and hypocritical government, who makes things up as they go, clueless!!!

They are 2 completely different things. Millions of people are homeless and have been left with nothing at all. If I had a spare room I wouldn’t hesitate!
