Hi Everyone, I have a benefits question. My daughter lives with us and is on work-related ESA due to ill health. We are going to but her a house so she can live with a friend who is a trainee police officer.
Question. Do we own the house and charge her rent then she would charge her friend rent (no formal agreement) or do we gift her the house and she then charges her friend rent. I can't quite understand whether she will get her ESA reduced because the rent will be classed as income?  When I google it just addresses people who have a mortgage. Also would the lodger sharing the bills be classed as income? Or if we own it and both pay us rent why would she get her ESA reduced?

    Hello @lynne2322

Welcome to the online community and thank you for asking your question. It's lovely to see you join us and I hope you are well today.

I have moved your thread over to our benefits and financial support category and marked it as unanswered :)

This is a very supportive and welcoming site to be a part of so I’m hopeful that you’ll find it to be a positive outlet. Feel free to have a look around and get involved wherever you’d like 😊 I have included below a few of the pages I’d recommend having a look through to get used to things:

    • The virtual coffee lounge which is one of our categories, in which we play games and talk about general subjects such as hobbies and interests
    • The recent discussions page, which shows an overview of everything happening across the community
    • The categories page, which shows a full list of discussion groups on the community

If you have any questions at all then don’t hesitate to ask.

What type of ESA does she receive?
If you were to charge her rent how would she find the money to pay it? She will not get any benefit help for her to pay rent to you.
