Taking 6 months off work to look after son who is having surgery

Hi I am trying to find out if I take 6 months off work as parental leave unpaid  to care for my son who is 10 and going to have spinal surgery for his scoliosis (curve of the spine) if i can claim any benefits for him and anything I can claim while I am not working thanks

    I’d like to follow this post, although I’m self employed so work when I can. My son is due spinal surgery some time this year too so will have a big gap in my books. 
    Do you have a date for surgery?

    Aw michelle so close. I’ve not got a date for my sons surgery yet because they keep messing up his appointments. Not sure if you would be entitled sick pay whilst your not in work, or maybe you could get income support till your son has recovered?
    been told it could take months for full recovery from this kind of surgery. Hope all goes well for you michelle keep us posted x
