Blue Badge - Car

Hi all,

I was just having a discussion with my mother and can’t find answers online regarding this. So my sister is a blue badge holder and we have acquired a motability car on her behalf. We use it to take her to appointments. I’m estimating she gets driven around once every 2 months. I drive the car for my personal use and commute times daily without my sister around.

Can someone please help with 2 questions:

1. Can I (not a blue badge holder) park in the disabled bay outside my door or is it just for use when I know my sister will be driven around?
2. Can I park in a normal bay in the estate using the blue badge knowing my sister won’t be going in the car the next day?

Give the council a call and ask for a disabled bay or allocation to it. You haven't said what council you are under but they are usually helpful. Normally as long as the badge is displayed in the vehicle you can use the space but, its not worth upsetting the neighbours or other user/s as you don't want the vehicle damaged, scratched, flat tyres etc. People can be very territorial.

If you have further questions I'll look up the statute but the council will have full knowledge so would start there.

I would have thought your sister would benefit more from having the PIP mobility income rather than a car she gets in 6 times a year.

Have Motability given permission for you to use the vehicle in the manner you've described?

You cannot use them as family or personal vehicles.

Generally all journeys must be with the Motability claimant present or for their benefit.

They take misuse very seriously.

The Blue Badge must similarly be used only to benefit the holder. It's not in any way for your personal use. I'd answer no to both questions.

The Blue Badge comes with a booklet detailing responsible use, and there would have been Motability paperwork stating acceptable use of the vehicle that was signed.

I think that you can be permitted to use the car to commute if it is part of supporting the disabled person… earnings going towards their needs.

Regarding the badge, you could need to take your sister somewhere at short notice.. would the bay be available..because it isn’t always about distance, but having enough space to safely get in and out with any wheelchair or walker needed etc..
