This is a poem about a friend that had died last month, and reflection of life in general:
Letter or Prayer.

Today I said goodbye, my friend

Who I met many years ago

He was more than a friend to me

should have been a  brother for me.

It made me reflect what life I’ve lead

and wondered, if it was well spent

lived it and made my parents proud

or was I living in a cloud.

Always thinking I was right?

never reflecting on my life

Being told I might be wrong

Always answering, without a thought.

The years have passed, and moved away

But, in my heart I wanted to stay.

I’ve made new friends, and started work

And received guidance from my first year.

My job progressed, and have learnt,

Always be true to your word

Oh yes I’ve made a few mistakes,

And understand what mum had said

All I can ask of you, is listen to what I say,

As now you’re a man, and will have kids of your own

I know you will not disappoint them

Because you turned me into, a proud mum.

Those younger days, when at school

And made a friend, who is there still today

His parents asked to meet mum and dad,

And commented on how well behaved I was.

The statement I came back with,

Was I am lucky enough to have been born to them.

From that day on, I was always welcome

Into his family and just like my mum.

As years had passed, we both were married,

And with our soul mates we had kids

Lucky two kids met my mum and dad

My daughter arriving months before she died.

To this day as I talk a lot, she wished she had met my mum

To say to her, how my dad’s the one

Who taught me about life and love

And now she knows where it began.

So spend the time you have, with your family and friends,

Because those memories of today, will help when times are grey,

Life is not meant to be a struggle, but to reflect what you have been taught.

I value life, I value love, and always give without reserve

My mum and Dad were the same,

As they guided me down life’s long lane,

And learnt that there are twists and turns, and side turns along the way,

And choices that you make, will deflect you from the straight.

But when you choose a route to take

Do your best, whatever it takes.

And don’t be afraid to say I’m wrong

Because its easier than carrying on.

If you continue to make a mistake,

It reflects on what you’ve learnt

That you surround yourself with material things

REMEMBER, you can’t take it with you.

You come into the world with nothing,

But life does not have to be that way

The impressions you leave today

Shape future lives still on display.
