Disability Sports Wales Event. Gwent.
I attended the Disability Sports Wales Insport event at Cwmbran Stadium in Torfaen, Wales, on Friday, 20 February 2026.
It was a great opportunity to try several sports in one space. There was boccia, golf, table tennis and boxing. But the sports attracting the most interest were wheelchair rugby and curling.
Attendees were initially hesitant try wheelchair rugby, but once they watched the rugby team play, there was excitement to get involved. Within twenty minutes, most had mastered the wheelchair and were enjoying the thrill of learning the rules of the game. I even saw a few people score tries, and there was genuine pride as they crossed the try line.
With curling featured in the Olympics this week, people were keen to have a go at this sport. Ben, the Regional Partnership Senior Officer from Disability Sports Wales, patiently explained the rules of the game. He adapted the sport to meet the individual needs.
Ben was a supportive, caring team member. He noticed people needed support, before they or their carers had even asked. He’d approach them and would offer unique tools and techniques to ensure everyone felt included in the day.
