Hello lovely members of the Scope community!

December 3rd is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a global celebration dedicated to promoting the rights, dignity, and achievements of disabled people. It’s a day to reflect on the progress society has made towards inclusion, spotlight the work still to be done (there's a lot), and most importantly, celebrate the disability community.

This year’s theme is ""Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future". Did you know that persons with disabilities make up 16% of the global population? Yet they rarely access leadership roles in the health sector. They commonly face numerous barriers which prevent them from accessing these roles, such as discrimination, stigma, or exclusion from education and employment opportunities.

At Scope, we’re passionate about ensuring that everyone can access the same opportunities. That’s why we believe that IDPD is an essential day to raising awareness and taking meaningful action.

Here are a few fun questions for you lovely lot:

- Who inspires you? Is there a person (famous or otherwise) who’s made a big difference in your life or in disability advocacy? Give them a shoutout and let us know why!

- What does inclusion mean to you? For some, it’s about having a workplace that truly values everyone. For others, it’s as simple as being able to go out and enjoy life without barriers. What would make the world feel more inclusive to you?

So, grab a cup of tea (or a festive mince pie, or is it too early?) and join the chat. 😊

I've grabbed my cup of tea in my Nightmare Before Christmas mug!

I've been very lucky in my recent roles as my managers have been supportive of the adjustments I needed to be able to do my job. They would make changes without question and would often think of things before I did! I wish this was the case for everyone and I hope that we can keep moving forward and help employers better understand disabilities and become more inclusive.

I'm a huge fan of Taskmaster and loved seeing Rosie Jones, who has Cerebral Palsy, as a contestant. She was by far the most enjoyable to watch as she just had such an amazing time which was even more brilliant as she was paired with the notoriously miserable Jack Dee! She doesn't let her disability hold her back and I think that's inspiring.

Not Hearing the word DISABLED aimed in my direction!!! In my world that word would be erased from the dictionary!

I have a disability which gets in the way of me doing SOME things NOT everything! I anybody who has a heart beating, lungs puffing or any other sign of life is not disabled. My argument is this. "If you want the Label of Disabled to be displayed describing you, That is your choice. Your choices make the person that you are. Choose your words with care, some words can, mould you, embolden you, make you timid, depress you, widen your mind words are powerful wonderful tools. Use your tools with care, choose the ones that make people feel good about themselves. One word can build a person so high that they have gone through the clouds basking in the sunshine above them. It is good to use words nicely and encourage others.

Back to the word Disabled!! This word makes my shoulders sag and I feel sad, empty, lonely, unloved devoid of the spark that gives us life. Consider machines, if you take away the power supply they need or the part that is unique to them brakes or is removed. the machine is said to be disabled. We are not disabled we are a person who can adapt to disability. My legs are not as strong as they were, I use a walking aid! Do you write off someone who has some bits that do not work or work as they should, NO NO NO you do not. So I want to encourage everyone to change their mind concept of negativity toward those of us with disabilities. Yes some things we know we cannot do. Conversely there is one hell of a lot of things we can do with the disability we have. Disability is finding ways to live and go forward enjoying life with all the wonderful things we have to look forward too.
