🎠World Theatre Day 2025 ðŸŽ
Today marks World Theatre Day. It's a day created by the International Theatre Institude to celebrate all things theatre.
Before coming to Scope, I studied and worked in theatre for a long while and I still try to get involved where I can. I love theatre but it can be a difficult thing to access sometimes!
Last year I visited Soho Place to watch Little Big Things, a musical about the artist Henry Fraser with many disabled people in the cast. It's one of the only theatres in London that has accessible dressing rooms for disabled performers. While it was brilliant to see disabled performers doing what they do best, it's sad that this level of accessibility doesn't exist in many of the other theatres across the country.
And that goes for disabled theatre-goers as well as performers. Lots of theatres are in older listed buildings that struggle to meet accessibility standards, especially with installing accessible toilets and lifts.
Do you find your local theatres are accessible to your needs? What do you think would need to change for you to access theatre more easily? I think the massive increases in ticket prices are another factor that stops people visiting. It can be totally unaffordable for many.
I'd personally love to see more opportunities to watch shows from home. I've used National Theatre at Home before and that can be good, but it would be great to see some more of these kinds of services. Some of the things available through lockdown made it so much easier for people to access theatre, but many of these didn't carry on afterwards.
There are a few different YouTube channels that post clips, podcasts, and sometimes even full shows. Here's a few basic ones in case you're interested:
- The Shows Must Go On! - YouTube - Clips from musicals
- WhatsOnStage - YouTube - Podcasts and videos about all kinds of theatre
- OfficialLondonTheatre - YouTube - Clips of London's theatre scene including BSL interpreted videos from West End Live
If you've got any more suggestions please feel free to share share!
Are you a theatre fan? What are your favourite shows that you've seen or listened to? Would love to hear your thoughts 😊

I treat myself to theatre trips now and then but mainly amateur productions that are much cheaper but still amazing. I particularly love musicals, earlier this year I saw Blood Brothers which was incredible
