Dla income support & uc

HI all, I was on income support when my son was born in 2010, my son was awarded dla in 2012 he has profound autism non-verbal, I remained on income support up until 2020 when I moved to uc and was awarded carers element and child disability element on my uc. My question is I have been told I can have the carers element backdated to when my son was awarded dla in 2012 even though I was on income support 🤷♀️ witch I personally don't think myself that is accurate or possible. Has anyone ever heard this?

What was your son's DLA award?

Hi my sons dla award was high rate care component and low rate mobility.

That would have qualified you for a Carers Premium on Income Support
So whoever gave you the information was right:
It would certainly be worth speaking to Income Support on 0800 169 0310 about the possibility of a retrospective claim.
Local welfare rights might be able to assist.

Thankyou for that information, I dont recall on ever having carers premium on income support, I did have carers allowance but never heard of carers premium on income support.

It might be worth checking any paperwork, if you were getting Carers Allowance they would have notified IS to look at your claim due to the change of circumstances when you were awarded CA.
You could also look at past bank statements and see if anything matches up with historical benefit rates
