I have recently claimed for bedroom tax exemption and my claim has been successful. My question is would that extra payment be added to my 4 weekly payments. It appears that it has been added towards my rent. I live in a council house and my rent was being paid in full already so why has another £60 odd been added to paying my rent. Just really confused with it really. Any advice I would be sincerely grateful. 😊

I'm confused, if your rent was already being paid in full surely there was no bedroom tax being applied?

We Have 2 bedrooms. My partner is disabled and needs his own room. UC were taking £60 odd from my 4 weekly payments and paying it towards my rent. Now since the exemption the money is getting sent to housing. So my rent is now being over paid. Hope that makes sense 🙃

Perhaps you have misunderstood your statements.

I presume you have a payment arrangement where UC pay your Landlord directly.

Deduction for bedroom tax doesn't get paid to Landlord. It gets taken off the amount UC pay for your rent.

Now you don't have the bedroom tax applied, the amount UC give to your Landlord increases.

You were getting one bedroom paid for, now you are getting two paid for.

Since the situation is so confusing, perhaps you need to show your statements to a local welfare rights organisation who can help explain things to you.

No, they are now over paying the rent now by the 60 odd that they were taking off me to start with. 🙃

If you were minus 60 with bedroom tax, and are now plus 60 without bedroom tax, that would be correct for rent where bedroom tax was applied, and now isn't.

If you are being paid £60 more than your actual rent, then you need to report your correct rent amount to UC.

PS I had a situation this week where after the annual rise my council landlord reported an incorrect rent amount to UC. £120 instead of £86 🙄.

I left a few Journal messages then contacted my LL who confirmed they have now reported the correct amount to UC.
