DWP Press Release - Universal Credit change brings £420 boost to over a million households

Some positive news released yesterday…
Details from the Government website below:
More than one million households struggling with debt will get to keep an average £420 more of their benefits each year, under a change to Universal Credit coming into force today [30 April 2025].
- Around 1.2 million of the poorest households – including 700,000 with children – will keep an extra £420 a year on average, due to Universal Credit change.
- New Fair Repayment Rate - which comes into force today - caps Universal Credit deductions at 15%, down from 25%.
- Comes as part of the Government’s Plan for Change to make working people better off by helping them into jobs and extending support for low-income families.
The change will be applied to all assessment periods that start on or after 30 April. The 15% deductions cap continues to support customers to repay their debts at a sustainable rate.

So to clarify nobody will actually be getting any extra money if they don't have debt with UC. If they have debt they are paying back then they will now pay 15% monthly instead of 25% which will give them another £420 per year or around £35 per month less they have to pay on debt. They will still have to pay the same amount back but it will just be spread over a longer time.

Spot on @Loulou82xx
Its just “good optics” for Gov and the media will spin it so it looks like every UC claimant will be getting more…encouraging the enraged “benefit bashers” who believe all the narrative headlines spun by Gov and media outlets.

But pip is still being cut for working people who don't claim universal credit.

Yes I saw that headline and thought that there was some good news , but it is just spreading over the cracks and makes it look like the Government actually cares about the disabled. It's time for the disabled in this country to be heard and looked after instead of being a problem.

For those that get this money it's £8 per week !
