in Universal Credit (UC)

Hi there I had to migrate over to UC by the 9th of May I applied on the 6th , and I got my esa payment the 7th on my Universal journal I recieved this message


Hi Katie,


Your ESA will continue for another 2 weeks from 6 May 2025. This means there will be an overlapping payment of ESA and UC  which will then be deducted from you UC award.


does this mean I will get another payment the 21st of esa? As that’s when I would have got another esa payment if I didn’t have to migrate over.


or are they talking about the 7th payment I got? I thought you got a 2 week run on regardless so I’m confused about them saying about a deduction. It says I am due a universal credit payment the 12th

    They are incorrect, ESA ends when you apply for UC apart from one further payment, known as the run on payment.

    It isn't always paid exactly two weeks later and isn't always the full amount.

    The run on payment is not deducted from your first UC award, I don't know why you have been told otherwise.

    hi Kimi that’s what I thought I’m

    Finding it confusing , someone said it’s because I should of applied the 8th the day after I got my esa payment the 7th of May and not the day before when I applied the 6th I don’t know if this made any difference at all.

    my migration date was the 9th of May I had a payment due the 7th of May of ESA I applied for UC the 6th of May

    Yes we usually recommend claiming the day after an ESA payment. This seems to ensure it's for the full amount.

    I do not know how much your run on payment will be as you claimed the day before a payment, and it is somewhat of a complex thing to work out.

    I did get the full amount on the 7th, but I don’t get what they mean about I’m going to be deducted for an overpayment from my universal ; that’s due the 12th of June I get the statement the 8th.. 😳

    The payment on the 7th was what they owed you before your application as ESA is paid two weeks in arrears.

    As advised, there should now be a further payment known as the run on payment. This does not get deducted from your first UC award, you were given incorrect information.

    they have commented back to me again saying again it will be deducted, if they do this shall I leave a comment on my journal saying this is not correct and needs looking into?

    The only IR ESA that should be deducted is if you are paid too much IR ESA by mistake, excluding the run on payment.

    Were you claiming ESA and getting a mixed award ? ( contribution based with IR top up) Though wording can seem like it was all income related


    I posted an issue where mixed awards were getting the two week run on as IR but deducted as contribution based from first UC payment (whereas wholly IR ESA claims benefited by keeping it)
