hi

can anyone tell me what a learning disability in an adult looks like?

When I had my asd assessment they recommended I’d have a learning disability assessment done, I asked my gp to do a referral, the gp done a orientation assessment and because I only got one question wrong they wouldn’t refer me even after putting in a complaint (waiting for the phso to get back to me)

I have requested an assessment through the adult learning and disability service but they refused based on a screening of my records rather than talking to me

I struggle with the following

Communication especially when anxious or overwhelmed

Self harm or breaking things again when I’m overwhelmed or frustrated

I struggle with cooking as the numbers on the cooker, the numbers on the packets including times confuse me, I even forget to turn the oven off

Any info appreciated

    Hi @apples, Sorry to hear they were dismissive at your GP appointment, that must have been so frustrating. I'm afraid I don't have a lot of experience with Adult Learning Disabilities but I hope someone from the community can help with some advice soon.

    Do you have a specific learning disability in mind that you think matches your struggles?

    I hope the complaint comes to a positive conclusion.

    My struggles are what I mentioned above, also struggle with relationships, probably more if I was to sit and think long enough

    Hi @apples

    A learning disability is about the brain not being able to process and understand information provided by others, especially communication problems.

    if what you are experiencing is a sound (speech) processing problem and problems using the visual notation of sound based communication (dyslexia), you could have problems processing and understanding the sounds that the ears hear.

    This is what I have and is Auditory Processing Disorder, which can be genetic, or acquired from issues that cause problems to the brains auditory system.

    Currently there are not many Audiologists in the UK trained and qualified to carry out assessments for Auditory Processing Disorder, especially for adults.

    I am aware that a local Audiologist (Audiologist of the year in 2016) in Hertfordshire who has three Hearing clinics can provide assessments for adults including adults from other areas in the UK.

    May I add that I think it's important to distinguish between a learning disability, & any sort of learning difficulty.

    A learning disability is when a person has a reduction in intellectual capacity, & I've always seen @apples give both considered & thoughtful replies on the forum. Of course I don't know them, but I'd be very, very surprised if they actually had a learning disability.

    That's not to say that apples may not also have a learning difficulty, such as dyslexia, discalculia, etc.

    Apologies for sort of talking about you @apples - how are you keeping & are you any further in finding out more?

    9 and half years ago nearly, I was diagnosed with an LD, yet contrary to popular belief I am NOT intellectually inferior! I freely admit I'll never win Mastermind but I am NOT stupid.
