Carer Element of Universal Credit
Someone checking our claim today has asked why we are not claiming carer element.
We never knew about it to be fair, but my question is my son gets higher rate care and lower mobility. We currently on uc get
Disabled children £495.87 1 disabled child
If we apply for this does this make his dla go down, and do we lose the above? Im really confused

Hi,
SDP was paid with ESA on Legacy Benefits. Your son cannot be getting SDP if he is on your UC claim as a dependent child.
You can claim both the Carers Element and the Disabled Child Element together on UC.
However, if you have health conditions yourself and already claim LCWRA, then you cannot claim the Carers Element in addition to that. Only one of those can be paid to each person.
If you have a partner who does not get LCWRA, then they can claim the Carers Element for your son.
