Death - what's it like ?

What is death really like ?
I have had a near-death experience over 3 decades ago, but I was inebriated at the time – so don’t remember anything about it….
I have many questions – does it hurt ? Is there an afterlife ? Does somebody that you used to love appear to guide you on your journey ? I am not religious in any sense so don’t believe in God – but like to think that we are not just switched off like a light, when our time is up.

Once those neurons stop firing in the brain that's it game over... no great beyond.. Just nothing i suppose.

That's a deep question for a Monday afternoon @Wibbles! But it is fascinating!
I don't have any religious beliefs either, so the way I feel about it is that it's a bit like sleep or like you were before your brain came into proper consciousness.
However, I'd like to think the process of dying might invite some of the things you wrote about and perhaps that might keep sparking for a while as your body slowly shuts down. For example, reuniting with lost loved ones, watching old memories, or being lead forward in some way. And hopefully a feeling of peace or relief from everything around you.
But I suppose that also depends what it is that you're dying from. I'd hope it isn't too painful or that any pain starts to go away as you get closer to the end.
I'm so interested to hear what everyone else's perspectives are on it.

I don't believe in a god, however there is an afterlife. I've seen too many things and had too many experiences to say there isn't an afterlife. My family have a sort of medium gift running through it. Death is not the end. Family members are always around you protecting and supporting you, and the afterlife is nice and peaceful where you see things the same apart from you get to teleport anywhere you want, and time works differently. (from what we've been told)

It must be comforting to believe in silicon heaven; after all, where would all the calculators go?
