edited July 30 in Benefits and income

Hi I'm looking for advice/help

I applied for ESA on the 21st July and received this text

I've just received this letter from DWP also dated 21st July

I've not had any correspondence or communication regarding my ESA claim but am mystified that on the same day that I make a claim DWP change my TAX code and include an amount of ESA in it.

Can anyone shed any light on how this has occurred before I contact DWP or Benefits

Thanks in advance

Hi @golfman59, welcome to the community. I'm afraid I'm not too sure why this might be the case but I hope one of our members can share some advice or insight.

I just wanted to let you know that to keep your details safe I've removed some of your personal information from the photo you shared.

Hope you can get some clarity on the situation soon!

Hi @golfman59 I had a similar situation, I can’t recall the exact timing in my application but I also received one of these tax notifications. I didn’t see anything asking me to act on it so for now I’ve filed it in my tax paperwork and will keep it for incase I need it. So far your process has been the same experience as I had so hopefully soon you will be contacted for a call with someone to agree to your commitments. I’ve shared on here my ESA process and timeline so you’re welcome to have a read of that if it helps. Good luck with application.

    Hi Overwhelmed 1

    Thanks for your input.

I do find it strange that the day I apply my tax code changed.

I've been Trying to ring HMRC but the phone lines are so busy.

Hopefully I will hear something soon.

    Thanks again

    Hi,

New Style ESA is taxable, so that reduces your tax-free income amount each year.

You will be getting NS ESA from the day that you apply at the assessment rate, which is most likely what they've based this years tax forecast on.

Eventually you will get a Work Capability Assessment which could put you into the Support Group, when your rate of ESA will increase and the taxable amount this year will also increase.
