Your first payment will be around 5 weeks after you apply.

You can apply online or by phone.

If you apply by phone you won't have an online account (known as the run Journal) to manage your claim.

Usually everything is sorted in time for the first statement (available 4-6 days before your payment date) but occasionally something is missing.

Citizens Advice have a Help to Claim service, they can support you before during and after your claim. This is a national service run by phone and webchat, not linked to your local branch.

Legacy benefits will continue to be paid 2 weeks after you apply, known as the run on payment.

We recommend applying the day after an ESA payment to maximise that payment.

This money is not deducted from your first UC payment.

You can apply for an advance UC payment, which is then repaid over time from your monthly award.

You can also choose to apply for UC sooner than October so things financially are more settled in the run up to Christmas.

Just another question,. I have a citzen ID card and need to update a photo of myself. However I will be getting new glasses in a month time, but I want to get it done sooner for UC identify , will they accept it as ID just having different glasses

I can't speak for the glasses but in my interview in the JC he checked my ears against my driving licence photo as apparently that's one thing they've use as a biometric measure … I had fun explaining my left one was different because a chowski puppy tore a bit off 😁

Speaking from my experience of migration, from JC id verification to replies on my journal, it's all been smooth and stress free.

To the point where they've said my first payment may not include the LWRCA but will be paid as soon as confirmation etc
