TV License

I reside in assisted living and was wondering whether residing in assisted living is an exception for having to purchase a TV licence or does one need to be living in a care home to receive such an exception?

    I suggest asking your landlord matthewkevin84.

    Assisted living can describe all sorts of different circumstances. I expect most likely you'll need one. Your landlord will be sure.

    Good question there @matthewkevin84 and not something I've thought about before now! I've had a quick look online and found this page on the TV Licence website which hopefully should give you all the answers you need. It seems to vary depending on the situation, individual and the housing you're in.

    It All depends on how the assisted living building is licenced. You will need to check with the management.

    All depends if you watch or download live TV, or watch on demand BBC programmes, if you don’t then you do not need a TV license

    The website that Albus sent is probably the best place to start. Also the other contributors all have a point. I can only say from my own personal experience and not of Assisted Living but from my days of living in a communal building (in my case an 'old fashioned Nurses Home for trainee nurses), because we had our own room if we had our own t.v. we had to have a t.v. licence. Students at University Halls of Residence require individual licences as well. However, I think that a previous person has mentioned it does depend on the building and type of Living Accommodation as well, and level of Assisted Living. If my memory serves from visiting patients living in Warden Assisted Accommodation still required their own licence if they owned their own t.v. Those residing in Care Homes or Nursing Homes I believe have different rules. It is worth investigating first.
