Roald Dahl Day!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits, Matilda…the list goes on. I am sure most of us have read a story by Roald Dahl or seen the films. He wrote so many wonderful stories and Quentin Blake brought them to life through his illustrations.
Dahl facts
- He made up more than 500 new words and character names, such as scrumdiddlyumptious, snozzcumbers, and frobscottle!
- James’ Giant Peach was almost a Giant Cherry. He decided on the peach as they are “prettier, bigger and squishier than a cherry”.
- Dahl was lucky enough to go to a school where Cadburys would taste-test their chocolate. This inspired Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
- Many of his characters were based on people from his life. The Grandmother in 'The Witches' was based on his mum. I wonder how his mum would have felt if she was one of the witches!
Wondercrump words
Here are some words that Dahl created, would you have correctly guessed what they mean?
- Giganticus – something very gigantic
- Flushbunking – something nonsensical
- Biffsquiggled – confused
- Babblement – a conversation
- Uckyslush – disgusting food
- Lickswishy – something delicious
- Glamourly – something very interesting
- Splatch-winkle – to hurry
See if you can use these in a babblement (a conversation) and leave people feeling biffsquiggled (confused)!
What is your favourite Roald Dahl story?

I've always loved Dahl, since I was knee high to a grasshopper, as the saying goes. I'll of course praise you for the shout out to Quentin Blake for those amazing illustrations, they often get forgotten about. 😁
My favourite quote is from The Twits and I still use it to this day;
“If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
