Trusts other than Mencap

We are exploring which would be a good trust to open for our daughter with special needs . We have looked at Mencap and wondered if there were any others that had specialism in working with adults with Special needs? We don't really have any family members who would want to take on the responsibility.

My mum and dad set up the disabled trust with their local solicitor. So maybe ask about it at a solicitor near you? There was a man in their local solicitors that specialised in disabled trust funds for when the parents pass away. He was really good for them and he is also brilliant because he will do home visit.

Also he even wanted to meet me so that he would understand what I’m like and what things I like in life. I chose to do it by video call and he called me at my care home and introduced himself and I showed him my favourite things like books and toys and PlayStation in my bedroom. He said that he makes sure people won’t pressure me to spend money on something that isn’t for my good when mum and dad are gone. He said one time a person whose money he was looking after was getting a new chair. He said the care home told him that the person wanted a chair and so he approved it but he went and did a home visit to the care home and checked, and the chair was in the communal lounge being used by everyone and not for the man as his own chair. So he made the staff move the chair to the man’s bedroom because the man wanted it to be his own comfy chair for his room.

He said he would help make sure the money is used wisely to look after me long term. The only thing that I can’t tell you so much about is that I have two friends who are my age and they are being the trustees and I know you said you don’t have someone who wants to be a trustee. I think he said that the solicitors place can be the trustees themselves or that they appoint someone. I think there’s a way they can do it. Maybe it costs more to ask them to take the extra responsibility, but I think it’s definitely possible and just ask them about it.

A few of my friend’s mums have already signed up with the solicitor too for their children with special needs and they found him very good and said it’s a great decision to do the trust because it protects us and makes sure everything is ok when they are gone.

he is based in Dorset by the way and that’s where my parents live. However he did a visit to Hampshire to meet my friend’s mum and had been willing to come to Hampshire to see me but we did video call. My trustees are in Dorset and in Wales and they’ve been able to do everything over phone / email / video so I’m just saying it doesn’t necessarily have to be very local solicitor if you find the right person. This particular solicitor my parents and friends like a lot because he has a little girl who has disabilities and will need care all her life and so he really understands and cares and is passionate about what he does.
