Hi, my name is Northernman! Can my wife ask for a 12 month PIP extension?

Quick question folks please.

My wife is on PIP, the review date is past and she has not received any update (or request to submit a review application). She is still receiving payments though.

I understand there is a backlog, but she was considering getting a Motobility car, but cannot because PIP has technically expired. (There needs to be at least 12 months remaining)

Is it worth her contacting PIP and asking for a 12 month extension to allow her to apply for a motobility car, OR would that trigger them to review her case urgently. She does not want to rock the boat and risk losing PIP.

Hi @Northernman and welcome to the community.

Usually the DWP will give a one year extension to PIP due to the backlogs with reviews. It usually arrives about 6 months before PIP is due to run out. If you've not received anything regarding applying for a review, it would be worth contacting the DWP just to ask if the extension has been issued and if the review forms have been sent.

    thanks Albus

We don’t know whether to contact them of keep treading water. My wife may not be approved for PIP if reviewed due to the tightening of the guidelines and Gov/DWP politics. If we ask for the review forms (and a 12 month extension), we might lose out in the long run as we don’t trust gov/dwp

Hi, you would need at least 12 months remaining to order a Motability car as a new customer.

Therefore, a 12 month extension would not be long enough, there would be less than 12 months remaining by the time you get the letter of confirmation and attempt to make an order.

Unfortunately all you can do in this circumstance is wait for the result of the review.

I totally understand the lack of trust @Northernman but if her PIP award runs out, it wont automatically be reinstated, it will just end and then your wife will need to start the process all over again. So it could be worth just giving them a call to check on what's happening.

is it worth contacting them to ask for a review? We are conscious that if we do, that will start the clock, whereas if we don’t, she will receive PIP until they make the first move and send out the review application. I ask this because I’m aware there is a huge backlog in even sending out review letters.

When is her current award due to end @Northernman that's the big question here.

If you would like a Motability car, you will have to take the risk of asking for an assessment as soon as possible.

but the payments are continuing. I understand this is due to a DWP backlog.

If her PIP has ended, she should not still be receiving payments. Have the DWP contacted her to say her award is continuing and has she received the review forms @Northernman?

the award date has ended, but there is a backlog at DWP meaning they are delayed sending review letters out. It is documented that payments will continue until review

Sorry, I'm a bit confused here and need to get the information correct before I can advise. So they have written to let you know about the delays and have granted a years extension, but they haven't sent the review forms? Is that correct?

Some awards are automatically extended without any confirmation of that. This has been happening since covid. Although it is quite unusual now. If payments are continuing after the initial end date then the award has been automatically extended.

sorry if I explained it badly.

The PIP award date expired in summer (June/July).

DWP haven’t written to her to advise it has been extended, neither have they sent out the review application paperwork.

I have read on the internet from multiple scources that DWP have a backlog and are delayed in sending out review application forms, but they will continue to pay PIP until the forms have been sent and the application has been returned and reviewed - but there are also delays scoring the review forms when received back by DWP.

My wife can't apply for a mobility car because the award date has expired, but doesn’t want to raise her head above the parapet to fast track a review (this is because of govt agenda to reduce spending etc).
