Hi, my name is tinaub! Could my friend bid for over 55 bungalows even though she is 33?

Hi

I have a friend in a refuge. She has been there for 18 months. She is 33 and has to have a hysterectomy soon due to gynecological issues. There were four of us in the refuge, two of us have got houses and one is going to be rehoused soon. Consequently ' Jane's ' mental state had gone down significantly thinking she will be on her own. My question is, would it be worth her bidding on over 55 bungalows seeing as she needs help with both physical and mental health issues?.She was 1-5 on a.flat but she hasn't got it so she was very upset this morning

Thanks

She will probably be barred by the system from bidding on over 55's bungalows.

If she has medical needs I'd suggest she gets her application reassessed, to see if she can qualify for more points.

I was a similar age when I applied for an over 60 bungalow. The key was having a DLA care award (so the equivalent of PIP). I imagine all councils differ and this was nearly 20 years ago so it’s not up to date information. It might be worth trying to find out if your council offer any scheme like this though

It is really shocking to find that almost all social housing bungalows seem to be designated for over 55s! In our case we could not even bid on one for significantly physically disabled 27 year old on their central housing portal. However, individual housing associations DO have discretion as evidenced by the fact that my son is now in a HA bungalow which was initially going to be classed as over 55 (all his neighbouring ones are).

It is not specifically adapted but has slightly wider doors, level access and a sort of wet room as well as a reasonable sized kitchen. He was about to be homeless so that may have "helped", so it is always worth approaching local housing associations directly and making the case.

As others have said, this will depend on the area. My own Housing Association have said they have no discretion to allow me a bungalow with an age restriction, or a property with a 2nd bedroom (which is what the majority of bungalows are in my area).
