Hi, my name is kari. Temporarily housed but it's unsuitable for my Autistic son, what can I do?
Hii,
I have seperated from my husband in May 2025 because of domestic violance.
I use to live in small house with his family, his brother his wife, mother in law and another brother in law who is not married.
My son have Autism. Council gave me house but its not suitable for my son.its 1 bedroom house. This is temporary accomodation. Permanent house still council will provide. But its been 5 month I am still waiting council have not said anything yet or replied to my email. They said you can find private rented house if temporary accomodation is not suitable for you. But rent is too high and housing benefit allowance is not enough to pay rent.
What should I do.?

Hi @mkariuk2015, welcome to the community. That sounds really tough, I'm sorry you're having to go through it all but it's good that you were able to get away from the situation with your husband. Are you receiving any support from domestic violence charities after leaving?
You could try speaking with your local Councillor or MP, they can sometimes help with housing matters but it may be that there isn't much suitable accommodation in your area at the moment.

I hope some of our members might have some advice to share soon too.

Unfortunately all social housing temporary and permanent is in very short supply amongst very high demand.
I appreciate the temporary housing is unsuitable for your son but a better alternative simply may not be available, others including whole families get placed into single room bed & breakfast accommodation so the situation could be worse as well as better.
Homelessness usually gives highest priority when seeking permanent social housing, so the position you are currently in is likely the strongest, plus the time spent waiting so far also can count positively.
They likely simply don't have anything available as yet to offer you.
Is it possible for you to phone the housing department, or visit in person to get an update?
