Hi, apologies if this has been covered before - I did a search but couldn’t see anything.

I’m the appointee for my autistic adult son who is in receipt of PIP and ESA (Support Group). I’ve completed the application for the transfer to Universal Credit for the Income Based element and am waiting for the confirmation of the benefit amount.

This it seems has also triggered the switch to new style ESA for the Contribution Based element and I’ve just received a letter from the DWP stating that my son will now need to have an appointment with a work coach and make some employment based commitments and that they’ll be in touch. My son’s situation means he’ll never realistically be able to work so I’m now a bit confused by the process and the expectations.

I assume you guys have seen this before so do you know what’s happening here? Is this some sort of new work capability assessment?

    The up to date figures are £281.10 a fortnight in New Style ESA and a £609.05 deduction from his UC award.

    UC is a monthly benefit and New Style ESA weekly, so the deduction looks wrong but is in fact right as there are 4.3 weeks in a month.

    To convert a weekly benefit into a monthly you multiply the weekly amount by 52 then divide by 12.

    UC Standard Allowance & LCWRA is £823.41.

    With New Style ESA, he will get £609.05 a month, topped up by £214.36 in UC.

    Plus any Housing Element or Transitional Protection, if applicable.

    Basically he is not financially disadvantaged compared to someone in identical circumstances but getting 100% of income from UC.
