hi everyone

So my mum has been on pip for quite a few years due to her health conditions

She has had, systemic lupus, fibromyalgia, hip replacements

Well she received an award for one year so we decided to appeal it and that meant we had to do a change of circumstance form which I did about last year and then we recently did the phone assessment which was about 1 and 30 mins long we wanted to appeal for her to get a higher award and a longer one so that was the process

DWP randomly called my mum and asked to talk to her? This is not part of the process and none of my siblings are there to support her as she doesn’t really understand the questions. Are they allowed to call out of nowhere?

My sister was there to help her with her telephone call assessment

Why are they calling again this is not part of the pip process?? Please help and advise me this is the only benefit my mum gets and she really needs it due to her condition

Hi @peachyorange25, sometimes they do call out of the blue. It may be that they had a couple more questions after the assessment or sometimes they will call to confirm some details before considering whether to make an award. There's a few different reasons they might make a call so it's difficult to say what it might have been about.

You could try ringing the PIP enquiries line to see if they can clarify what they needed. Hopefully they can put your mind at ease about what's going on. The telephone number is: 0800 121 4433

Does your mum have an appointee set up to help with her PIP? If she'll struggle to manage her claim by herself it may be worth looking into it. There's some information here if you'd like to read up on it: https://www.gov.uk/become-appointee-for-someone-claiming-benefits

Hope you can get some answers soon.

Hi Rosie thank u so much for replying to me
will they take my mums award away over the phone? She’s been on it for a long time and her award runs out end of next year so will they stop it completely because we wanted to appeal for it

I can ask my sister to try become an appointee but she’s quite busy she’s free to speak to them next week but not this week Do u think that will be ok?

Hi @peachyorange25, they don't usually take the award away over the phone. If after the assessment they decide that she's no longer eligible for PIP they will stop the award and usually send a letter in the post to confirm. Hopefully that won't be the case though and you'll get the result you're all looking for.

It can take a little while to set up an appointee, so it might be something to apply for whenever your sister has time. In the meantime, it may be worth just giving the enquiries line a call when you or your sister are able to just to see if they can give you any information.

Did your mum answer the call and speak to them or did she miss it?

    Rosie has given excellent help.

A Change of Circumstances is treated as a new claim. You have had the assessment. You can request a copy of the assessment report. You need to wait now for the decision. Your mum's PIP will not stop until you get the decision letter, hopefully you get the result you requested and a new award. This will overwrite any previous award.

The calls from the DWP could be to clarify some points or to ask questions before an award is placed. The DWP can call anytime but normally they don't.
