Just joined the forum, incredibly frustrated as I've just been told I am being put through the UC review process yet again. This is the second time in 16 months. I am dreading the call and whatever comes next, I am going to have to put on my carers yet again to supply information they have already had and they already know my bank balances have been going down over the last 12 months due to rampant cost of living rises.

The last review was in July & August 2024, they wanted 12 months of statements from both my banks, also PayPal transactions (I haven't used this PayPal account for 6 years). On the call they wanted to know about loads of outgoing individual payments such as window cleaner, child maintenance payments, payments to the credit card company, small weekly payments of pocket money to my child etc. They could plainly see that I have no capital or additional income but essentially were asking me what I was spending my money on. Surely these outgoing payments are beyond the scope of the legislative powers they have been granted?

I fully understand they are entitled to know what money I have coming in and that my capital doesn't exceed the threshold. They do not need to know what child support payments I pay or how much my window cleaner charges! (It's £5 a month by the way! 😆)

I am a disabled person with a number of serious conditions, also developed stage 3 sepsis a few years ago and barely survived. I lost 4 stone in a month and so much muscle mass that I'm not really able to recover due to my age and disabilities.

I am very fragile and unwell. Both physically and mentally, they have absolute volumes of medical evidence going back decades to confirm this including some very recent medical diagnoses.

Sadly after the sepsis combined with a general decline due to my physical disabilities I was not longer able to work and had to claim UC. The stress the entire UC process has caused me during the application, initial assessment, review assessment and now a second review assessment is absolutely dehumanising.

I am left with a sense of absolute dread for the call later this week. I am already in defensive mode because I want to know why I am being checked again so soon after the last one, also why the evidence I had to provide was far beyond the scope of what other claimants are asked for. There is zero whiff of fraud or an incorrect claim, they made absolutely sure of that last time but here we are 16 months later and the the entire thing starts again.

This is not a fit and proper use of taxpayer funds, it's just a dragnet to try and catch some people out but with also the added benefit of stressing some very unwell people out and potentially bringing their lives to an early end through stress. That will be a nice cost saving for them I bet.

Damn it, made a really long post and it hasn't gone through. Looks like I'll have to type out again. :(

Disabled UC claimant for the last 3 years, dealing with multiple life long physical disabilities as well as a very poor recovery from stage 3 sepsis which I barely survived, lost 4 stone in a month and most of it was muscle mass. Unable to fully recover because of my physical disabilities.

Went through UC review in July 2024, they asked for 12 months of statements from both bank accounts and also a PayPal account I haven't used for 6 years. Full ID check as well.

Once these were provided they then called me and have me go through the money I spent almost line by line. Child support payments, child pocket money, window cleaner, credit card balance payments.

At the end of it I was given the all clear, not a whiff of fraud, overpayment etc. It was humiliating having to explain my spending, not something I believe they are entitled to do beyond making sure the Housing Benefit element is paying the rent.

It caused me untold stress, my carers had to do loads of running around to get paper copies of everything needed. Then, on 10th November 2025 I get a text asking me to log into the UC portal. I log in and guess what, another UC review just 16 months after the last!

I am absolutely fed up, this is borderline abuse of power and is actually a serious waste of public finances. They have all my ID, decades of medical records, a current balance from both bank accounts that confirms I have no capital.

Yet I am being looked at again! Why? I am sure a significant amount of people drop dead with stress during these witch hunts and then the government can claim savings made. They are absolute evil.

Just an update, had the call, nice enough lady but clearly having to follow an unjustifiable processed. She advised me that they are only allowed to look at incomings, reviewing outgoings is not part of the process. I had to stop myself from raising a formal complaint about the previous review where I had to explain more than half my outgoings.

Some of these people are clearly on a power trip and don't follow the rules. Luckily I appear to have got one of the honest ones who just wants to do the job as it is supposed to be done. Time will tell.

IIm not sure if they just passed a bill where they can check bank accounts the bank informs them and they can question what you spend money on maybe someone knows better than me

4 weeks have passed, they have finally come back and booked a phone review for early January, no consultation, nothing. Just you must attend this phone call on this date and time. No mention of if I can move the review if the one booked is not suitable. It's absolutely disgusting, I have carers and now have to try and arrange for them to be available.

I'm glad they've come back to you @PapaJ. Do you think you'll be able to sort out carers to attend the review?

Sorry I haven't come back with an update up until now. The phone interview was okay but the lady changed her approach and actually started asking about how I spend my money, why I was predominately spending on credit card. I was polite but clear that she doesn't have the right to ask me how I spend my money, she tried to fire back that she was allowed if she thought anything was suspicious to which I replied that we both know the only reason for this investigation was that I paid £2880 into my private pension in 2024. She went quiet.

I think advised her that this is not deprivation of capital, it is completely within the rules even if the DWP don't like it. She swiftly moved onwards.

She again asked why most of my spending was on credit card, I told her the truth. In Summer 2024 my online accounts were hacked and downloaded to the darknet, a number of online shopping accounts were used fraudulently but luckily I was awake in the middle of the night and managed to block the affected cards within minutes. I immediately reported to the police, the bank/CC and Action Fraud. A few days later I applied for a CIFAS for my credit file. I explained that all of this was on record and provable. I now use the credit card to purchase almost everything because the alerts and controls are much much stronger than a debit card.

DWP do not like this as the law currently doesn't let them look at credit card spending. It gave her very little to ask about apart from child maintenance payments and paying the window cleaner once a month.

As she ended the call I asked her to put it on record that should I have to go through this again within a 2 years then I would be raising a formal complaint. Disabled benefit claimants should not be harassed for making 100% legal payments towards a private pension. Some people on here might not like it that I had spare money to make those payments, I would say don't be so judgemental. In 2023 I was critically ill, nearly died on a couple of occasions due to sepsis and barely left the house for a full year, I had spare money because I wasn't going anywhere or even eating much because I'd been so unwell. I used that spare money to pay into a pension that will go to my 11 year old child should I not make retirement age, it wasn't abused or squandered.

No fair play to you ! I hate living like this if they ask me the likley hood is i wont remember what i spent on they certainly want to make life more stressful what is the reason to ask for window cleaner payment not exactly the high life

It's all about creating a climate of guilt and fear, they want you to know they are watching and they are judging. It's disgusting. Yes I understand they have to eliminate fraud but at least in my case there is no question of fraud, just that they didn't like how I used spare money to contribute to a private pension. The government are okay with it, bitter resentful staff at UC and DWP certainly aren't.
