Migration to Universal credit

I was in the support group for ESA and Housing benefit. I also have also been awarded PIP. I received a migration letter with the deadline 17.10.2025. I made my claim within 1 month, that is 14.11.2025 as I was advised to do by DWP and the universal credit helpline. When I submitted my claim I was told, as expected that I would not need to provide sick notes. However, there is a message in my journal today asking for a sick note because, they say, I have not had a work capability assessment. This is untrue. I have had three one with PIP, one DSA and at least one with ESA which I think was the year before lockdown. My health has got considerable worst since then and I have been diagnosed with additional illnesses which I listed most of them on my claim form.

Will I now have to keep going back and forth to my Gp for sick notes after all this time please?

Will I have to endure another stressful assessment?

Can they make me do this?

Will my benefit be stopped if I do not comply?

Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you all for reading this.

    Hi,

The assessment you had for PIP is not a WCA. That doesn't consider work at all and is not of any use for UC. The DSA assessment is different as well, so again not relevant for UC.

However, the fact that you had ESA Support Group at the point of migrating means you should automatically be put into the LCWRA group of UC. As you only applied 1 day earlier, ESA will not had time to send your information across to UC. I would recommend that you don't send a fit note, as that is likely to cause more complication. Just explain that you are migrating from the ESA Support Group.

Once you have migrated, they can choose to do another WCA whenever they like, so you probably will have to do another WCA at some point in future, but it should not be during the migration from ESA to UC.

It takes time for ESA to confirm your status with UC.

This is usually, but not always done in time for the first payment statement.

All the UC system knows at the moment is you've reported having a health condition. UC treats every claim as a new one so system actions are geared towards this, not migrations.

You won't need another assessment as a direct result of migration.
