Very Lengthy Telephone Re-Assessment!
PIP phone assessment today — 5.5 hours long! I took two full away from the phone breaks for around 5 minutes as well as pauses to move position etc. The assessor was INCREDIBLE. The kindest I’ve ever had. She was so patient, so kind, and just kept telling me that it didn’t matter how long it took and that she would rather do it all properly so she got all the right information so I got the award that was right for my circumstances. She really made me feel like a person and not a number. My anxiety is now telling me though that maybe she was being overly nice to try and put me at ease and catch me out with something, or to try and say I was managing better with the assessment etc. Has anyone had a really nice assessor and still got a good outcome?
At the end we were talking about evidence as they hadn’t received it and I asked if they could call me back (she was waiting for her manager to reply to a query about the evidence and what was best to do). She agreed to call me back one hour later but no call received. Checked emails and texts and nothing there either. Should I be concerned because they didn’t call back, or because of how long the assessment took? As never had one take so long before - max has been roughly 2 hours.
Was told up to 8 weeks for decision. West Midlands folks: how long did your decision take?
I’m on enhanced daily and standard mobility, and this is my second or third reassessment (plus tribunal).

5.5 hours ?? 😮 disgusting. So, they were they testing your resilience and patience? I used to have very long telephone calls but that beats my record.
"she would rather do it all properly so she got all the right information so I got the award that was right for my circumstances."
PolarBear, you already have the award that is right for your circumstances. If it is reduced, you should ask what evidence they have (clue; none). Then be prepared to take it to a Tribunal for the "error" to be corrected.
If it's increased, great!

Oh gosh now I’m worrying it’s not a good sign! 😭
I guess she meant that she wanted to make sure I got the right award (that it wasn’t taken away)? And also that the mobility got increased if it should have been (I did tell her that I’d been told by a disability charity that it was appalling it wasn’t awarded at the higher rate previously). So I took it as her just being overly nice. Maybe naive of me. But she really didn’t seem to be trying to catch me out at all whereas on previous assessments I have been suspicious of that. I did ask her what she would be recommending and she pointed out that I had a “number of significant changes” which she would be focusing on. They were all changes for the worse such as waiting to see new health professionals (Pain Management, pain Psychologist, specialist physio), increases in more than one medication since last assessment, an OT assessment at home which recommended different aids and adaptations. So I’m hoping that goes in my favour!
It genuinely didn’t feel like an interrogation, she was so so lovely. She explained things over and over in so much detail that even with my brain fog and memory loss, at times I was thinking “ok I get that part now”. So I definitely got the impression she genuinely wanted to take her time with me which was so refreshing and not something I’m complaining about. I didn’t feel she repeated any questions unless on a couple when she repeated them I realised I probably didn’t answer her properly the first time so obviously her asking again was completely expected. So it was weird really as it just seemed to take that long to get through it all! I did struggle a lot with finding my words, forgetting what she had asked etc and obviously I had two breaks but I don’t think that those aspects should have resulted in the assessment being 3-4 hours more than what they usually are! So I really can’t put my finger on how on earth it did take that long 🤯 or what that means for me! The only thing I know is that I’m in a lot of pain now 😅

PolarBear, I may be completely wrong and really didn't mean to worry you. I hope you don't have a long wait to find out. It's a torturous exercise.

What on earth can they ask you in 5.5 hours? Both my face to face assessments were about 15-20 minutes!

I know it seems crazy but we didn’t even go over anything twice! In the moment I genuinely felt every bit of time on the call was justified but in the same respect don’t understand how it managed to go on for so long. It’s a bit of a blur!

Please don’t apologise! I really appreciate you jumping on the post to try and help!

Thankyou so much for all of your replies. The assessor did call back the next day but I missed the call and when I returned the call strangely enough the evidence had been delivered by Royal Mail. DWP have received the report and I asked them to confirm what descriptors the assessor has marked me down as meeting. DWP said those are very unlikely to change unless there’s any major discrepancies and based on those, I will keep daily living enhanced and move from standard to enhanced for mobility. Which is amazing, but my worry now is that at least 4 of the questions she gave me 0 points which was an outright lie. I cried when I was told that, as I explained in so much detail the help and support I need as well as the difficulties that I face with those activities. But she’s just totally ignored everything I said and basically said I can do those activities with no issue at all! It’s utterly heartbreaking that someone speaks to you for a few hours and basically says you’re lying. I now don’t know what to do in relation to disputing it. I know it’s pointless from a points perspective as I can’t get awarded any higher than enhanced, and I even risk having the award reduced or stopped. But now essentially it’s on paper that I can do all of those activities when I actually can’t. And with all these changes/potential changes being made to PIP, I’m worried having 0 scores could affect me in the future. Really unsure on what to do so any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I'm so glad you've been awarded enhanced for both! I understand after such a long assessment that being awarded 0 points for some things is upsetting. I've been through the same thing and it made me feel like a liar! I personally wouldn't dispute it as you've been given enhanced for both but I understand your reasoning. Someone may have experience of this and might have a different opinion, I would just be concerned about the award going down.

I wouldn't dispute this either.
When they reach enough points for an Enhanced award, they don't need to go any further. A 0 score doesn't specifically mean that you don't fit that descriptor. This assessor wasted so much time on the phone call I think they must have been new, and subsequently told to speed up afterwards.
As long as you've got at least 4 points in one daily living descriptor then you should be fine for future changes.
The only other one where points matter is in the Mobility section with regards to a blue badge. The points have to be in the right place for automatic BB in some areas.

thankyou so much for your replies. And thankyou for understanding what I was trying to get at in relation to still disputing even though I’ve got the maximum award. I’ve just checked and I actually scored 4 points on two of the daily living descriptors. Which is a huge relief in relation to this tenuous 4 point change. When the 4 point rule was nearly pushed through, I hadn’t actually scored 4 points on anything, so to go from that to 2 x descriptors is such a relief incase they do ever bring the 4 points in.
I’ve actually just had a call from the decision maker - the organ grinder as I called him which he found hilarious 🤣 he was so so nice!! He confirmed I’m on enhanced for both AND he’s backdating it (which i was told on another forum is hardly ever done now?!) the reason for the call was that he wanted to know how long it had been since I’d been unable to walk more than 20m. I went into full blown panic as I really didn’t know! Then I was panicking as I didn’t initiate the review and whether my answer would affect that. So I just had a majorly rough guess whilst shaking like a leaf because of the unexpected call and good old mother anxiety feeding off of it. I told him 6-12 months (it was after this that he confirmed the award and backdating). Does anyone know why he might have asked this? Have I shot myself in the foot? As my memory is so bad from brain fog and lack of sleep etc that I’m thinking it may have been longer than that now.
also just another question sorry…Initially the DM kept telling me I’d got nothing to worry about and would get the decision by the weekend in the post. But I told him I was really worried (and he acknowledged earlier in the call that he knew I’d been really anxious as I’d called a few times to see if there was any updates available), and so I asked if he could do what the previous DM a few years back had, and to call me once the decision had been made to let me know. At that point he said he didn’t need to call me back and could confirm my award had increased and been extended (but when I asked how long for he said he hadn’t yet decided as he needed to look at what the assessor had suggested and whether he agreed, but that it would be “a minimum of 2 years”. I’m not sure what he meant by this as surely extended would mean for longer than 2 years as my last award was 2-3 years 🤷🏼♀️
I understand backpay is typically paid in 2-5 days, so when he said I’d find out the decision via post, would I not receive the usual call re backpay to confirm I’m happy to receive a lump sum and that I hadn’t been away or living in prison etc in which case I’d find out the decision because of that call?
sorry, you can see my mind does total overtime. I know it’s so easy to say “just wait for your letter”. But when your heart is constantly racing and you feel sick, that’s not so easy to do 😕
thank you so much for your advice and kind words so far x0 -
@PolarBear95 Congratulations on your PIP Enhanced for both Elements Award! You have two four points descriptors so stop worrying, though that ruling has been dropped! I have come across other members where the DWP has realised their disabilities got worse in the past and backdated pay was issued. So that looks positive! The DWP just asked a question about how far you could walk, stop reading into things and worrying! Excellent the DWP confirmed your award, so it is worry free time now! Your award minimum would be 2 to 3 years. The 2 years mentioned will be the 2 years before the review form is sent for the next review. It is obvious the DWP have not decided on the length of your award by what has been said. It will probably be longer when you get the decision letter. You could have asked for a longer award when you sent in your review documents this time around but they don't always extend it. If you are not happy with the length of the award when you get the decision letter, you can put in a MR quoting your are happy with the award but can the award length be extended. I can't say for definite though there is not a risk in doing this, I have to say that, as a MR does look at the whole award again usually. Backdated pay is normally paid first. Those questions you mention are just standard and are asked prior to an award and no award. You have been told for definite you have an award, so don't bother about some questions that have not been asked.

Thank you for the update @PolarBear95, must feel like such a weight off your shoulders!

thankyou for your replies! I think I will not risk asking for a longer backdated payment as I really need some time away from the worry now (as you can tell!) I called today and they’ve awarded for 4 years which means I can finally breathe 😮💨

I was referring to the award length (4 years) not the backdated pay length.
