Scope's Purple Badges for Disability Equality in Parliament
Scope are raising awareness of International Day of Disabled People by giving out purple badges to MPs to show support for the disabled community. The aim is to promote more conversations about disability equality in Parliament to keep the topic on the political agenda and make sure disabled voices are heard.
Guests will include MPs, Lords, Trustees, key corporate partners and Scope Assembly Members. Speaking at the event will be the Minister for Disabled People the Rt Hon Sir Stephen Timms.
We hope that MPs will wear the badges at Prime Minister's Questions at 12 noon which is directly before our event!
Come together for disability equality
- This International Day of Disabled People, Scope is calling on people to come together for disability equality. Not just for one day, but to join a movement for change.
- There are 16 million disabled people in the UK. That’s 1 in 4 of us.
- Disability affects every community, every workplace, every family. It’s time we treated disability equality as a priority.
- Disabled talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. We want a future where disabled people have the same rights and chances as everyone. Where barriers are removed. Attitudes are transformed. Where disabled people succeed, thrive and participate fully in society.
- Together, we can create an equal future with disabled people.

I was sorely disappointed by the UN's theme this year as it really said nothing IMO. But I attended the Scope Zoom meeting and they used the theme to introduce Scope team members, and I loved meeting them. Such beautiful people. That's to the credit of Scope, not the UN.
How did this purple badge event go?

The event went well thank you @StarryEyed 😊 Just less than 90 MPs came, and there was lots of great discussion between them and our fantastic Scope storytellers!
Quite a lot of MPs also wore the purple pin badges during PMQs too, which was great to see. I've put some screenshots below. We played a fun game of 'spot the purple pin badge' on our way to Parliament 😀
I'm glad you had a good time at one of our other events!

Hi @Tori_Scope and thank you for your message. The pictures are so exciting - proof that there are people in the political world who are going to bat for us. What is a "Scope storyteller?" Is that like the people at the Zoom meeting I attended, who tell their story for events?

Oh, and what are the red ribbons for?

To tie in their bonnie brown hair?

Hi @StarryEyed - no worries! My apologies for not explaining, a Scope storyteller is someone with lived experience of disability. We (Scope) support them in sharing their stories in a range of ways, including at events or in the media. You can read some of their stories on our website, too.
The red ribbons were for World AIDS Day I think 😊

Or something like this perhaps?
Thank you so much for your response. 👍😊
Yes, you're right - World AIDS Day is on Dec 1.
I saw a few stories by selecting "real life stories" on your link. It's so important to lend many personal stories to build a strong, unified voice.
Bye for now. Take care.
