Back dated ESA

I am on UC now but the last 3 month's of my ESA (wrag group) before going on UC, I Applied for to go in the support group and also applied for PIP and got awarded pip mobility and living and LWRAC as I had moved on to UC when the decision was made. So i think I'm due 3 month's ESA support group backdated money as it was backdated to 3 months before i was put on UC. But I keep speaking to the same person when i phone up and he just doesn't get what I'm telling him and says I'm not owed anything…Surly it's not that confusing to work out.

Hello @Steboro. To check I've understood, did you put in a change of circumstances on ESA or was it a review? How long had you claimed ESA prior to moving to UC?

If you reported a change in circumstances (for example a worsening of your condition) on ESA, and were reassessed as part of this change of circumstances, I believe that you should be paid from the date of reported change. When did you have your assessment @Steboro?

I informed them of a change in my health condition the beginning of March, had the assignment in June but then got transferred to UC in July and got the letter and put in the lwcra in August got a bit of backdated from UC but nothing from ESA also got PIP mobility & living .I don't know if you get more money on ESA if you get PIP living ?

New Style ESA is paid at a flat rate with no premiums.

So your PIP doesn't impact your ESA in any way.

Ah I see what you mean now.

You can see the difference in ESA rates here:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/benefit-and-pension-rates-2025-to-2026/benefit-and-pension-rates-2025-to-2026

Support Group will have a higher component amount than WRAG, and the Enhanced Disability Premium becomes payable with Support Group.

If dates align the PIP award may have also entitled you to Severe Disability Premium if your living circumstances qualified you (it doesn't matter if your ESA was WRAG or Support Group).

    https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support/disability-premiums#Severe-Disability-Premium-eligibility-criteria-click

If you think you would qualify for SDP then you need to contact ESA and request to make a backdated claim.

If awarded Universal Credit should then adjust your award.

If you'd like support from a local welfare rights organisation
