Happy Hanukkah!

An image of dreidel, chocolate coins, sufganiyot (similar to doughnuts) and candles

Today marks the start of Hanukkah (or Chanukah) for Jewish people all over the world. The Jewish festival of lights runs for 8 days. This year it will happen between 14 and 22 December.

Each night, many Jewish people will be lighting a candle on their menorah, eating delicious food and practicing many other traditions to celebrate. This might include exchanging gifts, singing traditional songs and playing dreidel, a spinning top game.

Wishing all those who celebrate a peaceful and happy Hanukkah! Chag sameach!

If you celebrate, what kind of traditions do you enjoy during Hanukkah? Would love to hear what you or your family do to celebrate ☺️

Note: This discussion was written and posted before we heard the news about the horrific attack at a Hanukkah event in Bondi, Australia. My thoughts are with all those affected and the entire Jewish community. Sending everyone peace and light.

They won't be celebrating in Australia after what's happened on Bondi beach.

Thank you for your comment @onmylonesome. It's my understanding that Australian police have declared the incident a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community. What has happened in Bondi is deeply distressing and our thoughts are with the victims, their families and anyone impacted by the tragic news.

This discussion was started before we were aware of the news, and intended to share goodwill. We still want to hold space for that too, so to all those who are celebrating, we wish you a peaceful and comforting Hanukkah, especially during what is a very difficult time.

It's incredibly sad @onmylonesome. As Adrian kindly said, I wrote this before I'd heard about what happened so I've added a little note to the post to say just that. Will be thinking of everyone affected 💜
