Pip and going into hospital

in PIP, DLA, ADP and AA

hi everyone I’ll be going into hospital soon but will be home on Saturday and Sunday and back to hospital on Monday, this will be ongoing for about 4 months . Pip says I’m entitled to border payments for the days I’m at home. Has anyone heard of this and know how they work it out . I get daily living and mobility .

    @letitbe I was in hospital a few times but I knew it would not be 28 days, so I did not inform them. They have seen my discharge letters though as evidence of my condition. I will be honest I was unaware of Border payments.

    After 28 days, PIP daily living component is not payable to in-patients in hospital or residents of care homes where all or part of the costs are met from public funds.

    After 28 days PIP mobility component is not payable if you are in hospital. The PIP mobility component is not affected if you are in a care home.

    If you are under 18 when you are admitted to hospital your PIP is not affected.

    Border payments: PIP claimants may be entitled to border payments for the days you are at home during an interrupted hospital stay. I assume you get paid for the days you are at home at the weekends.

    There are complex linking rules which might mean that your PIP stops earlier than 28 days if you have had a previous admission to hospital or care home.

    Have you called PIP on the subject of Border payments? It may help others if you did not mind letting us know what was said.

    PIP Mobility is unaffected by any stay in hospital or care homes - PIP Care component is only affected after 28 days - if you return to hospital within 28 days, they add up !

    Hi @letitbe - @Wibbles is correct. How it's worked out is that the day you go into hospital doesn't count, & normally the day you leave doesn't count either (if your hospital stay is less than 28 days), but when you're going back into hospital in less than 28 days, then your last day of being in hospital does count as 'being in hospital.'

    'Boarder' payments is a bit of a mis-nomer, it just means that the daily living component is payable at a daily rate for the days that you're back home before these 28 days are used up.

    PIP Mobility is unaffected because if you had a Motability car - and went into hospital - what would happen to Motability payments during this period, they must be paid regardless…..

    If you have a Motability car and are likely to be in hospital for more than 28 days, it is crucial to inform Motability. They will discuss appropriate arrangements with you about your lease, depending on your specific circumstances. If you are in hospital for more than 28 days, you or someone acting on your behalf should contact Motability to discuss the next steps and ensure that your car is not left behind.

    From Motability:-

    The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will not make PIP or DLA payments if you've been in hospital for 28 days or longer. Once you come out of hospital, the payments will start again. You need to tell the DWP as soon as you go into hospital.
