Change in rent price declaration
Hi,
I had a letter from my landlord yesterday stating that my rent will be increasing from Monday 5th January 2026. When will I need to declare this on my UC online account? I’m hoping my UC housing element will cover this increase as it’s only by £20 per month.
Thank you

The UC system can't deal with future changes, so you need to report it on 5th January or ASAP after.
UC Housing Element pays up to the LHA maximum for private renting. There is a calculator here.

Thank you for your reply. That’s really helpful to know!

Hi @Kimi87
I’ve just changed my rent pricing on my UC account and declared the changes. Do I need to get in touch with my council to notify them that my rent has changed / increased? I access council tax reduction so I assume I might need to inform them or is it done automatically in line with universal credit changes? Thank you0 -
The Council Tax you pay/CTR you qualify for is not linked to your rent, so the council have no need to know that your rent has increased.

The only people that need to know are Universal Credit, because they pay your rent.
