Locking yourself out?

Does your front door automatically lock behind you when you shut it??

I realised this morning I hadn't put my bins out and I haven't had a collection since before Christmas so I didn't want to miss it, so ran out in just my nighty to quickly put it out.

It crossed my mind that if my life were a movie that the door would lock and I'd be stuck outside freezing - but I've never in my life lived in a house that the door automatically locked behind me (thank goodness!! I'd be locked out all the time if I had🤣)

So does your door automatically lock behind you?? Has anyone actually been locked out??

    At previous address, yes.

So now, thumb turn inside lock.

    Keysafe outside.

Code registered with local ambulance service, which adds a flag to my address that the other services can access.

    Covers most possibilities!

Thankfully I've never been locked out but I feel like I've had a couple of near misses😄

Mine does now, as it is electric opening, auto closing. Only a recent addition & the guy that fitted it kept saying, don't forget a key or the opener when you step out. I nearly got caught 3 days ago, only going to my neighbour, as I'd taken a parcel in for them, luckily my braincell sparked as I was still near enough to quickly stick my crutch in as it was almost closed. Now have a key safe, just need somebody to fix it to the wall.

Mine doesn't lock behind me but I'm always worried about the key not working when I come to unlock it. This did happen last year which reinforced that fear! 🙄 Eventually got it open after a lot of jiggling, don't know how I'd have coped with trying to get a locksmith out. After that I tried to change the lock to a new one with a new key but couldn't get the old one out. Ended up leaving it unlocked each time I went out for several months. Luckily nothing got stolen. (I don't go out far or for very long). But have now managed to fit the new lock and key so am locking it again…this one works smoothly, but I'm still worried about it getting stuck every time! 😅

Mine doesn't thankfully, as I also often pop the bin out in pajamas and a dressing gown. 😅

This sounds a bit like something I struggle with

It's what I now am aware is working/prospective memory deficit rather than plain forgetfulness (though maybe that's just a modern and overly liberal doctor?)

When I stay in a hotel I know I will at least once shut the door and leave the key in the room, then need to do the walk of shame to reception

Forget to leave the handbrake on when I park my car… fortunately no accidents or even embarrassing incidents yet but I'm waiting for the day when I get back to the car and it's in the middle of the next road 😆

I've started leaving little prompts to remind me of stuff like this. Maybe that's something you could do?

Do you get similar?? I'm ok if there's a task that needs doing now but like anything that needs to be "banked" and retrieved at a later time (like, close the window in 45 mins) I can't do

It's simple enough to adapt for, for most things – like if my parents tell me to lock the door before I go up to bed, I'll just do it "now". But some things have to be done later i.e. when cooking

The scene in the intro or outro of The Flintstones where Fred gets locked out of his house really stuck with me when I was a kid, I remember thinking how it seems like it would be horrible thing to experience and I'm so glad it's never happened to me.
