Best charities or organisations for voluntary work for disabled people.

Hi everyone, I was wondering whether anyone knew of any organisations that help people with disabilities to find voluntary work?

I would love to go back to work but I wouldn't last the week or even the first day. So I'm trying to find voluntary work that I can go to on my good days. I try and work for a couple of hours once a week when my pain allows at a food bank. But looking for something else now.

Do any of the major charities help to find voluntary work or is it a regional thing where I need to just find local charities etc? Any advice greatly appreciated.

We have lots of info about getting into volunteering with some links to search for opportunities near you https://www.scope.org.uk/advice-and-support/volunteering-develop-your-skills#Volunteering-opportunities-click

It's wonderful that you already work in a food bank! Do you have any charity shops near you? They're usually a good place to start but it depends what type of volunteering you'd like to do.

@Rachel_Scope Hi Rachel, thank you for the link I shall check it out!

Charity shops are a good idea. I should ask if I could pop in and help when I'm having a better day.

I can't sit in chairs for very long and standing and walking varies from not at all to short periods. I bring a fold up mattress thing with me wherever I go to be as comfortable as possible.

But yes that's a good idea. I should talk to them and see if I could be helpful in any way.

Hi @TripToo. I don't live in the UK, but I do volunteer work for a charity shop. Like you I'm very limited standing or walking, so I used to do just a short shift a week when I was able to stand and walk a little. But now I can barely do that, so I started making recycled jewellery for them with their donations that were unfit for sale. Is that something that might interest you? Or perhaps if you can sew, you could mend things that need mending so they can be sold?

Local Councils usually have a 'volunteer services' where they can refer you or direct you to a charity. A quick search found this site https://getvolunteering.co.uk Might be of use.

@StarryEyed Thank you. Yes I should go round to the charity shops and see if they need any help!

@TripToo you're welcome and good luck! Keep us posted. Maybe you can inspire others here with your volunteer journey? I really like the social aspect of working at/for the shop. Today I dropped off my recent creations and it was really nice to see my co-workers.

@StarryEyed Thank you. That's kind. I'm having a bad pain day today. It's days like these that make me doubt myself whether I could do it. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day. I shall keep you posted.

I hope tomorrow is a bit of a better day @TripToo, have you got anything to help the pain?

@Mary_Scope Yes I have pain killers. They do help and get me doing certain activities but very limited. I had to cancel a hospital appointment this afternoon because of pain.

Hoping tomorrow is a better day!
