WWhere To start this is my first time posting.....

I work at a car dealership as a booking advisor. Work does know about my health I have fibromyalgia and erythromelalgia. I have requested to work from home as my flare ups are unpredictable and I try and explain that there are many triggers to what bring up a flare but I don't think they fully understand. I'm currently going g through a flare up and they did send me a laptop to me and was able to do some work but I had to speak to my doctors about my pain medication but also sent me a sick note I spoke to my manger and I did say can I still work from home and not give you my sick note as you are aware of why I am unable to come in to work or did you still need me to sent this in. My manger then called me said to stop working and someone will collect the laptop as with the sick note you can not work. My brain wants to work I need to work but I know I need to listen to my body and rest I'm stuck I don't know where I stand or anything. I'm sorry for the long message but if any one has any advice will be appreciated thank you

Hi @titch90 I've been in a similar situation in the past so completely get how you're feeling with wanting to work, but not being able to be in an office when things are bad. Have you had a occupational health assessment? If not, I'd suggest doing so, just so when you are feeling better and able to be in the office, that things can be put in place to make it more accommodating for your needs. They might even suggest an element of remote working (they did in my case). It is at your companies discretion as to whether these measures are put into place but if they've provided a laptop to you, hopefully they will offer some measure of support.

As far as resting, from what you've said it sounds like your body is telling you that you might need some down time. Are there things you can do whilst recovering that keep your mind busy, but that aren't too strenuous. Things that you can pick up when you're feeling a bit brighter but you're not obligated to when you're needing to rest a little more. I hope you start to feel better soon.

Hi, From an employers point of view you cannot be sick under a sick line and be allowed to continue working. The two are likely incompatable from your works Hr and abscence management policy and it is likely this that is guiding their thinking…..It is this policy that kicks in when they may need to calculate amount of time off, repeated sick periods and from a pay point of view ( do you go on to help pay at a certain point etc)and whether your absences breach the policy criteria.

I would request a copy of your abscence management policy. This will have detailed information including trigger points that you need to be aware of.

I would second the use of your employers Occupational health provider. You can ask for a referral to be made. This is useful to both you and your employer and allows you both to work from the latest health report. Occupational health are there to support you to stay in employment and have the authority to provide suggestions to the employer based on what you have told them. This may well be reasonable adjustments, including working from home etc if you’re employer can accommodate this without disruption to the buisness. Most employers should listen to the recommendations of OH.

I find you need to be proactive in these things, do not let time go by expecting work to sort out everything for you.

    Good luck
