Anyone tried walking groups?
There's a women-only walking group launcing in my area in a few weeks time and I'm really considering going to it, at the moment only the organiser and 1 other person have signed up and if it's that small I'm wondering if I can manage it, but probably not. The set off point is almost directly outside my house and you can leave any time along the route (which is also a route I often walk solo)
I'm quite excited by the idea but also terrified. I've been going out for small walks by myself and have managed some long walks, I know I need to get back to socialising and this feels like a low pressure way, if it was well established and big I'd never join but if it's new everyone is nervous right??
Does anyone do things like this? I'm actually suprised at myself for even considering it and see that as progress even if I don't end up doing it!!

There is a walking group in my area but very often their walks are more so hikes as they tend to do a lot of mountains and uneven paths which is something I'm not able to do due to my disability. But, their January walk was much more accessible as it was a very flat and even walk around a reservoir so that was really nice and I enjoyed it!
I think doing something active while meeting new people is a great way to break the ice as you're all there for the activity and its quite low pressure.
Even if you don't end up going, even just thinking and contemplating going is still a big thing so good on you @Biblioklept!!2 -
I miss the mountains very much, and i say go for it. Where do they go?

@Biblioklept .Hi i don’t think we’ve chatted on here as I don’t post much. Though I live in Scotland and there are lots more so women walking and chatting groups . Like yourself I haven’t done a lot or had many hobbies. Though I would say go first time see how it goes. Don’t be ti hard on yourself if you wish to start small and build your strength up . I think it’s something a lot more of us just need to go outside our comfort zone. Please let us know how you get on 👏🩷🩷🩷🩷

Go for it @Biblioklept !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sounds like the perfect kind of group for you, almost as though someone had designed it just for you!! It has a lot of complications removed that on their own wouldn't be a big deal but accumulatively could push it into "too much" - like the exit routes and not having to do an unfamiliar route.
Have you tried getting in touch with them yet? That could be a good next step. You wouldn’t even need to disclose anything that might make you feel less secure or less able to do your current walks if you ended up not going - like it being outside your house or on your current route. I'm not trying to say you won't achieve it, but knowing that dropping out is an option and that it won't jeopardise what you're currently able to do should reduce the pressure and it can make you more likely to manage the push.
This sounds sooo similar to where I was a couple of years ago (I'm not saying you're behind me, it's not linear like that and we're all ahead and behind each other in different areas, you're ahead of me in so many things). Making the first step is scary and really hard and there's a chance you won't fully manage it first time so going in knowing that is really important. Being aware means you will be able to treat whatever you manage first and subsequent times as a success rather than a binary total success/total failure (especially common with people with our issues). From the past paragraph of your OP it sounds like you've got that mindset already.
What you say about everyone being nervous first time is super true too, and not just in mental health-type groups but just about any group!! It can help a lot to know that, not as a comparison-type attitude but as a "we're all in the same boat" frame. Knowing you you will probably want to help and reassure somebody else there and will forget to think about your own anxiety ❤️
If you’re able to share what things are holding you back at the moment maybe people could talk you through their thoughts on some of them??
I think it’s so cool that you’re even thinking about this though ❤️

Oooh this sounds cool! I always find if I'm feeling shy or nervous, it's much easier to make conversation if I'm doing a shared activity with people. A lot less intense than sitting face to face and having to keep a conversation going! This sounds like a nice way to get out and about and meet people without too much pressure.
As you say, it's really good that you're even considering it so I hope you're feeling proud about that whether you decide to go or not ☺️

I used to do a walking group in my area, and like you I was super nervous at first so had my support worker go with me a few times. It was alot of fun, the only downside to me was that everyone else in my group was slighly elderly and I would end up walking twice/3 times the distance they did. Sadly it stopped in my area too a year ago.
I think you'd enjoy it, you can go at your own pace if needed. Its a great way to get out and about and maybe you'll find some new secret areas in your area you never knew existed.

No where near as adventurous as the mountains!! I'd love that one day, I feel like I'm meant to be outdoors, as much as I find it incredibly difficult! They just go around the parks and green areas near me, despite being in a big city where I live is quite rural ❤️

Me too really @Amberpearl but I'm just so aware that if I want to not be this way for ever, I need to do things that terrify me, even though I end up with physical side effects from it too!!
I realised recently that the idea of staying living like I am is far more terrifying than anything else. Obviously day to day that doesn't matter and is hard to remember as the active fear is more overwhelming but I try and remind myself of that when Im struggling badly

Hi @Music34!! Yeah I don't think I recall your usename, it's awesome to meet you ❤️❤️
Thank you for the encouragement x
I've never really had many hobbies and it is something I'm trying to change rather than wasting more of my life rotting!! Have you joined any of the walking groups?? I'd love to got to Scotland one day, it looks so beautiful!!

Thank you @66Mustang ❤️ I knew you'd understand!
I haven't reached out or gotten in touch with them yet, even that feels like a huge hurdle! I've obsessively researched, and load up the advert multiple times each day though 😅

Thanks @Rosie_Scope!! I'm definitely surprised at myself for even considering and trying to see that as a real positive whatever happens!
@rubin16, the lady running it is in her 30s and the other person that has signed up is early 40s, they say all fitness levels welcome but hopefully it won't just be really old or really young people and will be a mix! As a 30-something myself the current group seems like a good start but I hadn't considered different walking speeds and stuff. 😣

@Biblioklept thanks . I’m not one for posting a lot I do read some of the topics on here which have helped me out in so many ways . Scotland is beautiful place to visit . Gosh even me living here there are so many places I want to venture to . You asked if I had looked into any walking groups yes I found one which is called walking and chatting which sounds like a great start for me and it’s not like 5 miles or 10 miles like some . I wanted something to start of gently it’s around a park at own pace and chatting which sounds my kinda thing as i do like talking 🤣🤣🤣Maybe if I put as much effort into walking part 🤣. It doesn’t start until next week and great part it’s free for the first month then if like it I will gladly pay . @Biblioklept I think your walking group which is at end of you’re street is a blessing in disguise it’s certainly meant for you to give it a try go for it you have nothing to loose and lots to gain . Walking is the best form of exercise . Keep us posted please 🩷🩷🫶xx
