It will be interesting to see how this plays out. A Member of Parliament does not automatically face a by‑election if they change political party because, in strict constitutional terms, we elect the individual rather than the party. That is a core principle of how the system is designed to function.
The debate is certainly worth having, although it is difficult to imagine Members of Parliament voting for a change that would restrict their own position once they have been elected.

Hi Catherine, thanks for sharing this and thanks Rosie for adding the link. So much of this happens in the shadows with contracts going to mercenary companies whose have little or no interest in providing a good service but more with building up ownership in a market so they can monopolise and control it. I am not sure whether Palantir has any failures in delivering government contracts but there are definitely some big names who have been held to task or fined over contracts and failings but are then awarded another big contract and that carousel keeps turning.

Thanks so much for sharing that @Catherine21. After reading it I emailed my GP tonight so they’ll see it on Monday morning, just to double check that my Type 1 Opt Out is still active. I opted out years ago, but every few years I double check to make sure it’s still in place. Your post gave me the nudge I needed.
Just to add a bit of clarity, parts of the rollout are actually already happening. The national contract has been awarded, and some trusts, including my own local hospital, have already started using the new system for things like waiting list and theatre management. The full national rollout isn’t complete yet, but early adoption is underway.
I would also suggest that anyone who, like me, values their privacy and opted out years ago might want to double check that their opt out is still in place.

I don’t use the NHS App myself. I opted out of hospital level data sharing last year through the National Data Opt Out, as I knew this new scheme was coming in and I didn’t want anything shared unless it directly related to my health. So both my GP information and my hospital information are only used for my care, and the hospital would need my permission if they ever wanted to access my GP records for anything else.
Your post reminded me that I hadn’t checked my Type 1 Opt Out for over two years. When I first set it up, I was told to check it now and again to make sure it’s still active. Because the Type 1 is held by the GP, and I don’t use the NHS App or any online services, it’s easy to forget about it. Not being online with the NHS actually works better for me, if I need an appointment, I just phone the surgery and book it over the phone. I prefer speaking with people directly.
I know it might sound a bit cautious, but GP systems do get updated from time to time, and occasionally settings can change without anyone realising. So I just like to double‑check every so often.
