Savings over 6K and paying off UC overpayment.

Hi, my UC is now being reduced as I have savings over 6k. I have an outstanding UC overpayment of several thousands. I feel I should clear some of that with my savings. I'm just concerned that that will be deemed as disposing of savings to avoid the reduction of ongoing UC claim.

Wondering if paying a couple of thousand off the OP might prompt a review.
I could make a journal entry to say that I've made a payment to clear my debt, if that is necessary.

Guess I'm being a bit paranoid.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi,

Now that you have over £6k in savings, dropping back below that again is likely to trigger a review regardless of where the money has gone, though it's not a definite.

Leaving a journal message is unlikely to make any difference at all, they don't bother reading them if you're in the LCWRA group.

Personally I would have paid off the lump sum before passing £6k, but I understand it's too late for that in your situation. Paying off the lump sum now should be ok as paying debt is allowed, though it does look a bit dodgy from the UC side if you've been making small regular payments for a while.

Yeah, I thought as much. Sometimes you just don't know what to do for the best.

    Thanks.
